Few comments about the movie
by Anish on Dec 02, 2003 08:11 PM

It was such a pleasure, reading this article specially about this movie kal ho na ho Anitha, for your knowledge 1)this movie did very good buisness over there.I am not going to see such movies anyway.I know because back here there is so much critisism about such movies that no one wants to see such rubbish.2)i know for sure what kind of trash movies that are being made now days, that either you come out grumbling or you get migrane or you simply go to sleep.Their language is so cheap and narration is so poor and the whole movie is made in such a poor taste that we wonder whether these so called 'classy' film makers have any script sence. And yes you are right that they show Americans in poor taste which is not true at all. They are influenced by a)seeing some trash hollywood film and they want to remake it in bollywoood b)Over here they go to some socialite affair,a big party thrown open and you have wine and booze and lots of western wannabies who think that by wearing little clothes, they are being fashionable or modern or hip or upwardly mobile. And bingo you have your picture taken on page 3 of leading newspapers and mags. They have not even spared the songs.Where are good scripts now

Need for reality....
by Munish on Dec 02, 2003 08:03 PM

Hey !

Your article seems pretty good.Although I m an indian born and raised in india and now in US but still i couldn't help myself appreciatinf the honesty lying in this article.
Indian directors are really need to think before coming up with negative portrait of indian-american.No doubt level of independance one enjoys in US is greater than India but it doesn't mean independence causes amorality. In India even in not too bigger city like chandigarh i read in one nation wide magazine that more than 5000 abortions are happening every year. These are the cases which are listed in doctors list rest who knows. So where the amorlity lies..??Everything is happening but under the shades of darkness.
I met some indian-americans guys & gals here. They are very kool.Best thing is they are very honest about their thoughts and never wanna makeup for that unless most indians.
Since Ciname is the medium which connects the indian-american and indian culture. It is the need to come up with some reality cinema which reperesents the true picture of indian as well as Indian-American Culture.

KHNH Review
by Dr. Bharat Thakkar on Dec 02, 2003 07:38 PM

Anitha Venkataramani makes a lot of sense. Those filmy Bollywood people come here in USA just to play with our (NRIs) sensibilities without understanding the deep meaning of how we live our daily life. They profess that they do understand, but they overlook important things, such as how we practice our indian culture and spirituality, our respect for US as our Karma-Bhoomi. They are interested in filling up the theatres and their pockets with sensational material rather than depicting universal human feelings. This is no different than the British took our raw materials, process them in England and sell it back to India and exploit. Some of the enertainers do the same. KHNH is an example of that. They take few shots from NY and process them there in India and sell them back to us. If they spend their profits for the upliftment of the NRI communities in US, they would earn my respect. They don't even know the rules and don't even respect for the American flag. I am sure they respect the dollar! In my opinion, they should apologize to US Govt and remove those scenes. Other views are encouraged.

Enough said.

Bharat Thakkar, Ph. D.

When you see a general Hindi Movie, you must leave the logic. The writer is little bit confused.

This couldn't have been said better!
by Sudakshina Mukherjee on Dec 02, 2003 06:03 PM

I totally agree with you Ms Venkataramani, you have voiced what many of us Indians who live abroad feel about how we are represented in Hindi films.
I have lived most most of my life in the UK and some of it in Calcutta, which I really miss a lot. I've been lucky enough to get the best of both the weast and west.
I'm not saying that the kind of people certain hindi films represent are not true. However, that does not mean that every NRI don't know what actual Indian culture is all about.
What's really damaging is that whenever I go to the Indian chatrooms, people ask me whether I wear skimpy dresses,do drugs and booze,or have a zilion boyfriends. When I ask them where the hell do they get all these ideas from, they would say from certain Hindi films.
This is really offending, because people who really don't know much about the lifestyles of NRIs, believe in these films. Shouldn't these filmmakers then respect their belief and do justice to both Indians and NRIs?
Hey,if these filmmakers really want to be seen as understanding NRIs, then shouldn't they be more truthful in what they are portraying about them?
Please keep this in mind to whom this may concern!
