Disappointed
by Salman Ali on Apr 09, 2003 03:52 AM  | Hide replies

I'm disappointed with these two artists, especially Jagjit Singh who I thought would be a bit more mature than the tacky Abhijeet. I'm not sure what's driven them to this, consnidering the fact that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan sang for many Indian movies, and Indian models like Lisa Ray appeared in NFAK's videos like Afreen Afreen.

Perhaps the real reason is that tehse people feel threatened by high calliber talent from across the border. I agree that Indian performers should be allowd to perform in Pakistan, but banning Pakistani singers reflects the same kind of self-destructive mentality that our politicans display.

A more apt response would be to approach the Pakistani consulate in India or better yet, write directly to some high-powered Pakistani politician. These things have a way of working, especially if you're like by Pakistani fans.

All of this seems so childish, immature and reflects the insecurity of these singers.

Come on u havent been to pakistan all of u we have terrorism inside of our country more then u can imagine. There good and bad in pakistan, now stop blaming thigns that bad peopel do to your goverment and people. I hope u guys know in pakistan we have people attacking mosques so shoudl we stand up and blame indians for killigns int he mosque we know sum peopel are mental but u cant blame evryoen for that. Its time india matures and solve this like true human beings . We love our indian brothers and sisters, cuz we know we were born there thats our land too, we wont hate on india for no reason.

Very Disappointing
by Jun on Apr 08, 2003 11:18 PM

It is very childesh, immature and disappointing to know that Jagjit and Abhijeet would start complaining like that instead of making some good music. This kind of attitude makes things worse, and as we all know, both Pakistan and India has nuclear capabilities, so war or hostile attitute towards one another is not a way to solve the problems. Only peaceful negotiations can bring peace and anyways, politics and entertainment should be separate, but I'm forgetting only a grownup adult can understand that...duhh

Jagjit Singh, Abhijeet: Ban Pak singers!
by Raja on Apr 08, 2003 09:48 AM

All those idiots who want to put the performances of a few Pakistani singers on the same plane as our refusal to play cricket - wisen up!!! We dont play cricket bcoz when our team goes there, we go under the tricolor, which is something we do not want to do in these difficult times. The singers are not coming here under the Pakistani flag, are they?

A few singers coming along and singing a few tunes - that was enough to make Jaggi and Mr. Ole Ole nervous - ha ha. What about all those years when Jaggi tormented us with his rendition of ghazals, etc? What is Jaggi afraid of? He used to get sold out concerts in the US - maybe finally people saw through him and realized - hey, we can sing probably better than him him even in the shower.

Go ahead and ban them Pakistani singers. Go ahead and give your vote to Mr Ashok Singhal, etc. But, dont come running back when we have a Haliban ( Hindu Taliban ) in India.

Pakistani singers in India

It is very important that we understand what is being requested here: It is simply being requested not to host any Pakistani singers in India when our neighbors are very hostile in every possible way towards us. I think this is a very fair request. What is really disgusting is, comments by some people trying to politicize this issue and criticize the BJP gov. for everything. Indians should learn what patriotism really is from the Americans. No, I am not hinting on some calling "French Fries" the "Freedom Fries", just because France threatened to Veto another UN resolution. It is the support that the common people give to their troops, though they may or may not really support the war (against any country). Our people are getting butchered in Kashmir, our troops have made/are making/will continue to make the ultimate sacrifice in a perpetual battle against the atrocities by this lunatic neighbor. When such is the fact of life for us, should we even think of inviting them? The difference between us and the other countries is only this: Most countries nationals aim for at least a win-win situation (if not I win-you lose situation), but in India, the timid Indians always, I repeat, always go with a losing attitude - "You WIN, I lose" - be it a cricket match or much worse a war with our lunatic neighbors.

This doesn't mean that you should humiliate Pakistani singers/artist's: Don't just invite them to our country, until our neighbors learn to live peacefully. Again, this has nothing to do with BJP ruling our country, nor being about Hindus learning to respect themselves and earn from others. Just think about the sacrifices being made by our Jawans. Do any of you even remember how those inhumane Pakistanis tortured our soldiers and sent the mutilated bodies during Kargil conflict?

I completely agree with Jagjit Singh and Abhijeet. All Pakistani singers should be banned from performing in India. India should also put a ban on marketing their cassettes, videos and CDs.

why ban them ?
by Venkat narayan on Apr 07, 2003 08:25 PM

Pakistans attitude towards India is very childish, and if India reciprocates, we will also be judged by the world as they judge pakistan. Indian singers need not go to Pakistan to attain fame and glory. Indian singers and performers are perhaps more famous in pakistan than many of their own artists. Banning on Indian films in their cinemas and TV channels only made Indian films more popular in Pakistan. Today an average Pakistani national would rather watch an Indian film than one produced from within. We will not do what they are doing. India is a mature democracy that carries a culture of tolerance. Pakistani singers have come and gone, made a bit of money and fame inside India which only shows that India has truly become a world class nation that rewards talents.

Fully agree with Jagjit Ji and Abhijeet
by Anand Subramanian on Apr 07, 2003 08:12 PM

It is rather sad to see Indians talking about art/music here and talking against Jagjit ji. Arts/music is not at all something non-commercialised as people(specially Indians) make it out to be. In fact it is one of the most commercialized of entertainment forms today. Only artists who have struggled and made it up there would vouch for that. Maybe its very difficult for the common man to really grasp that. There is no reason why Indians should go out of their way and let Pakistani singers reap the goodies in Bollywood. We have enough talent in India to take advantage of the stage here. And please - none of that "art" stuff please. It is really a primitive thought. Indians who want to listen to Pakistani artists should visit Pakistan for their share of concerts/shows by Pakistani artists. Not that there is any dearth of entertainment in India.

Jagjit, Abhijeet: No Pak singers
by Vijay Krishnan on Apr 07, 2003 06:04 PM

Dear all,

How could anyone even mix talent, art and music with the age old Indo Pak ongoing relations. That the Pak singer or rather the famous Adnan Sami is making money out here in Bollywood is the greatest testimony of the fact that he indeed is a talented and versatile individual, please guys dont mingle the artists with a communal minded outlook..Let India set up the precedent of being ONE who appreciates ART in its natural form while ignoring the same about the artist's nationality...I would deeply condemn the stand of Jagjit Singh and Abhijeet and just term their anguish as a sense of insecurity and inferiority for themselves, you have always enternained the Indian audiences with your performances, so please dont tarnish your images by stooping to a level like this..God Bless You all
