is it true ?
by vishal patel on Apr 09, 2016 11:01 AM

I have heard that from sugarcane you can make alcohol.
if it is true , alcohol is the real culprit as there are so many factories in maharashtra , plus i think they too require a lot of water .
Then there are pepsi/coke factories , they too require huge amount of water , they are the worst culprit , these co.s will take clean water to make pepsi/coke and discharge effluents, containing excessive levels of pollutants again in the ground , making water impossible to drink and making the land infertile . No one is taking action on them , some one pls take up cause .

Water guzzling crops to be stopped &start water conservation
by rajesh venkatraman on Apr 09, 2016 10:46 AM

Earlier days the water was aplenty and growing sugarcane is fine. All rivers were overflowing now the population is increasing as well as the per hectare yield with use of fertilizers and agri methods. but water flow now is reduced in all major rivers across india and most of them are polluted and not fit for consumption. We need to maintain our water bodies to save drinking water to the max and create more if needed to conserve water for future generation.
We need to build more forest cover along the sea coast and also in the cities, towns and villages which are becoming scarce these days as most trees are cut for making in the name of development.
The govt should have regular meetings with agri and horticulture dept which can provide details on the crops that can be grown as alternate to the current plantations or in between cultivations of the major crop, alternately they can suggest spices that can be grown or vegetables, or cash crops in the same area which can help in case of drought and water crisis. All water guzzling plants, trees and crops need to be stopped or they need to be taxed

Stevia is the alternative
by prashanth prashanth on Apr 09, 2016 09:40 AM

Farmers should be encouraged to grow stevia plant which is a natural sucrose. It is 300 times more sweeter than sugar. Had the author mentioned about this would have been an eye opener for many health conscious people.

Does the author suggest one should stop eating and wearing clothes to save water and allow entertainment programs like IPL to happen in drought hit state.
While author fails to understand majority of people are dependent on agriculture income and if demands down for agriculture goods from where these people dependent on agriculture will feed there family. Have a boarder sense of understanding situation before making comparison between entertainment and necessity

Don't twist the issue. Author didn't suggest that you should stop eating to save water. We all should know how to use scarce resources. Water saved by stopping sugarcane cultivation can be used to produce some other food grains in much larger quantity. Sugar can be imported, may be at a slightly higher cost. What other option we have? No Govt on this earth can generate water. Because of global warming effect, ground water level is on the decline.Even if you dig a tube well up to 1000 ft, you don't get water. Govt can only take steps towards water conservation and diverting to less water consuming crops is one such step. This may not be a fool prrof ultimate solution but one of the option.
