Even if it is sugarcane,it must get priority over IPL which is a money making business for a paltry few.As it is ,cricket is a game pursued in hardly a dozen countries over the world and has become more of a distraction. The country is facing a severe water crisis and such extravagant use of water must be avoided at all costs.Even if we take tea without sugar, sugar exports will earn us much needed foreign exchange.
Bad planning by Mahrashtra Govt. Doing too little too late. Hopeless Mahrashtra Govt when alot should have been stopped months ago. Govt caught napping till last minute. IPL is indulgence. Sugarcane farming is a necessity yet, water consumption should have been curtailed months ago. Construction activity should have been stopped.
How many of us knows when we use Mineral water production more than 30 percent is getting out as waste. If we reduce taking RO which is good for health improves our immunization, reduces the body and bone weakness etc.etc. Elangovan

you are right. in sathabdi express while travelling from Chennai to Bangalore, one thing I noticed is they supply full 1 litre bottle to every passenger. Almost 30 % of passengers do not open the bottle at all. about 60% of the passengers drink only half of the bottle and balance half is left in the train itself. Now for a 1 coach train with full capacity 720 litres is supplied everyday every trip. now if we calculate the waste of water the value would be huge and definitely it can be put into use in a better way.

RCF and BARC which are along side sea n lot more in Maharashtra! Desalination plants using the avail be heat and wasted heat can be used to convert sea water to pure water!! May be a Capitol expense one time but will generate water for their own use and extra. RO plants with solar power can be done too esp sun light except few weeks in an year!! Time Maharashtra govt do something!!
Its not just IPL & sugar plantation but all activities which consume lots of water during drought should be stopped. Construction activity, barring necessary construction works, should have been stopped soon after failed monsoon. More water cut should have been imposed long ago & not at last minute. More importantly, Govt should impliment new measures to increase rain water storing, eg: water from one lake should be made to flow to another nearest lake at overflow level during monsoon. We should invite foreign experts to suggest ways to augment rain water to maximum capacity.

People should not be allowed to have bath during drought seasons and so many measures can be adopted
It was duty of BJP led Maharashtra govt to order shut down of all sugar factories and stop cultivation of sugar cane in the areas where it was known during September 2015 that these areas will have tremendous shortage of water and all available water should have been reserved for drinking only, however BJP govt failed to guage the situation which now is beyond any solution. It shoulsd be understood that we still have to pass two more months before we expect reasonable amount water to be available if the rainfall is as predicted.
But who can dare touch these products and its farmers? Any politician for that matter has no gumption to touch these products. Howsoever dedicated they are to their job, certain fields like sugar-cane, tobacco cannot be touched for want of political will.Every politician has his nimble fingers in these businesses. I will advertise to stop smoking or chewing. I will increase excise on these products every year. I will ban smoking in public. I have diabetes. But sugar is a necessity. Without 2 teaspoons of it, I cannot start my day. There will be no whiff of it from even the general public, who have voted them to power. They will talk of price rise over a cup of tea with 2 teaspoons of sugar. Drought or no drought, water is a must for these products.

Yes, sugar is a daily necessity, IPL is not. So water usage needs to be prioritised. You cannot stop eating sugar but surely one can stop watching clun level matches in Maha.
