Leave alone potable water. Most of the crops stated in the write up can be irrigated by treating the sewage & waste water by simple treatment of aeration. If IPL proposes to use sewage/waste water for using in the pitch preparation, the same can very well be used for the crops cited above. Why should Mumbaikars forego their chai/coffee without sugar for playing IPL?
The crops dont consume the water, infact the crops act to recharge the groundwater. I am from an area which once grew paddy. Paddy growing uses a lot of water but the crops are grown during rainy season and the standing water in the fields act like water harvesting and recharge the ground water. However now everyone has moved to cash crops, but now wells are becoming dry since cash crops use sprinklers and the rain during the rainy season just flows down with the river to the sea
Not augmenting the storage capacity all over the country. In the last 20 years possibly the only major water management project has been the Narmada/Sardar Sarovar Project which is changing the face of the states benefiting from the project. . These days the so called activist lobby does not allow anything to move, on top of it we have the NGT manipulated by activists with all false knowledge. . These days weather can be manipulated and rain bearing clouds can be literally stolen away. Just google and you will get all details. Is anyone in our country even thinking on those lines. Why is monsoon failing year after year, it is because of weather manipulation. . There is no point in blaming any crop or the people for water shortage.
Value the Human lives, Drought is the major problem facing many parts of the country. If so playing cricket is important than human lives, play it in the place where there is no issue for the human lives.

yes, i agree with nikhil kumar. instead of criticizing govt. or farmers for growing sugarcane. BCCI should buid some tanks to store rain water. and use it for pitches. IPL is for people and by the people not the other way.
I fully agree with Author that Sugarcane is an issue. I am from the area where 70% of farmland is used for sugarcane. It requires lot of water. If you leave the crop without water for 10 /15 days, then the crop is gone. Second you have to look after this crop for 11 months. Means 11 months of continuous water.
However I think the one cause I am mentioning here is more dangerous. Now a days Agri people are using Technology of Mobile to On/Off the Water motor pump from the comfort of the house. They do not need to go to the farm. You keep all the tracs open and start the motor in the night. Normally they get continuous light in the night. So without inspection on water water is going the way it found the track. This is simply wastage if water and more dangerous trend happening. Farmers are now less interested in going to farm and work in the night. This is the hard truth.

very rightly said...problem in India is that no one wants to address the real issues...major water wastage in the country is in irrigation.
