Last year I traveled by Air India to Chandigarh. I found that its seats were more comfortable than in many Private Airlines.

Government should not be running business!
by Tom Dick on Oct 14, 2013 08:01 PM  | Hide replies

Government is not capable of running business. IAS officers are not business people. Civil Aviation bureaucrats are not interested in the growth of the airline. Their interest is elsewhere. A good example is old B.O.A.C which was owned by government and it was losing money heavily untill Mrs. Thatcher decided to sell it off to private investors. Now British Airways has become a successful airline. It was prime minister Thatcher's decision which made the turn around. What we need is some one with guts to make changes.

Yes, Government should not be in the business of 'Doing 'Business'. Post independence conditions were different which necessitated Govt doing Biz - for PROVIDING the basic facilities. Slowly the competition caught up and it is EFFICIENCY which matters now. It is a well known fact that this particular state of Air India is inevitable and has happened to almost all public sector organisations not only in India but every where in the world. Sooner they transfer it to private better will be the realised value.

Then, how was it that Air-India made profits earlier. If the officers are allowed to function as a business enterprise without interference, it will certainly flourish. Air India is being deliberately brought to a coma stage.

Mr.Kannan...previously AI made profit becuase of lack of competition and prices of tickets were decided by a cartel called IATA (airlines are members) Nowadays, the price of tickets are decided by market condition. Do some research on prices of tickets in 60s and 70s and now. In the past air travel was for the rich only and now it is available for anyone and everyone. When earning go down, one has to be prudent enough to make a saving on the little money you get. Here comes good management.

Why do people spill beans only after retiring . What did Bhargava do to stem the rot? The analysis is correct . The first ones to hang should be the politicians who put unreasonable demanda on the airline for their own comfort and that of their kith and kins and . Buying an economy class ticket and upgrading to first class was a standard procedure . Every time the PM or Prez travels abroad the tab is picked up by the airline . Payment are only paper transactions . And the entourages are huge with everyone freeloading . And then other leakages like during lease of aircraft out or in and purchases take their toll .Till date no aviation / airline professional was given the leadership of the airline . It is always some 'Jack of all trades guy'. Airline business operates with a very thin margin . This was bound to happen .

It has to be auctioned to the highest bidder.

If no bids come, it must be liquidated under chapter.......

It is a cancer eating into the civil aviation economy of Bharatvarsh.

Stop feeding the bacterias.

as an austerity measure, all officials were to travel economy, but air india was instructed to upgrade all officials above a certain level. On official tour , only the official travels, but air india was instructed to give complimentary tickets to spouse of persons above certain level. sons and daughters of vips were given very high paying jobs as sports persons, though they never played for air india. indian airlines was merged with air india so that employees of IA can visit foreign countries free of cost. the complimentary tickets to working and retired employees and their EXTENDED families is unimaginable. the family extends to unimaginable levels.

Deliberate exploitation by politicians and bureaucrats
by M on Oct 14, 2013 01:35 PM

Deliberate exploitation by politicians and bureaucrats brought the company into knees;
It is an airlines to provide freebies for public-servants and public-representatives and their families also its employees who are all all responsible to just rob it for free;
It survived because of monopoly game and getting into employment through contacts of such guys only;
Year after year they robbed public exchequer and lived five-star class just shamelessly without any accountability and service guarantee or quality; This company is just for robbing public exchequer by all involved in it and nothing else;
