is the food worth it ?
by venkatesh rao on Jul 10, 2013 12:41 PM

I have seen that the rice that is given under subsidiary is of very poor quality. the FD shops sell the good rice to shop keepers at higher cost. if this was a game changer why was govt sleeing on it since long ? what ever is said to the Govt will fall in deaf ears since all they are now interested in is to retain power by hook or crook.

Redistribution......

Excellent article. But will any person of any substance in India, the so called decision makers, will entertain any contrary thought. Those who disagree will be immediately branded "devils against poor". So no political party will see the sense in the views.

arond 1950-60s, kamaraj cm of tamilnadu, introduced free schooling plus free lunch upto matric for all the boys & girls of tamilnadu!

that singe action took tamilnadu to leap frog to 80% literacy and consequent benefits like increased GDP, HDI now after after a period of 50 years.

RRE will benefit if the poplation is atleast 90 % literate! that includes better educated and honest govt. and civil supply employess.

compulsory education & incentive to family planning in poorer sections of the society where population growth rate is maximum. the incentives should be the maximum where individuals will not be able refuse the offer!

RRE has the importance of later order!

Free education and high literacy are present in Bengal and Kerala too-still both these states are great economic disasters(Kerala's wealth is from NRI earnings alone and not generated by its own people at home). High literacy is a necessary but not sufficient condition for economic progress

very nice article
by Ganesh Krishnan on Jul 10, 2013 11:55 AM

the article rightly points out the problems of giving things free. the govt should rather empower its masses constructively through right policies. you cannot have socialism and capitalism together, it becomes hypocrasy as has happened now. please don't get carried away by the sympathy of UPA towards its masses-all these are stunts used to win electoral gains. it is surprising that an economist like MMS can give farm loan waiver and role out doles when the govt kitty is empty. what has the govt done to improve agriculture? where are sound agriculture policies? where are policies to protect erosion of environment? what is the use of RTE legislation, when there is no action on the ground? so no thoughts! its all done with the eye on 2014 elections- that too in the garb of inclusive growth and secularism- both are absent. God save India!

Prof.Sen should understand some fundamentals .
1.One should work hard for earning the bread and butter.
2.For that one should cultivate morals, ethics and values.
3.The governing system must focus on the above said twin issues.
4.The present political set up is totally based on vote bank politics. Some how they want to go for cheap tactics. The other day i met two farmers and my interaction has rvealed -i.they are not cultivating,ii.the reason is that no labourer comes forward as they get more money in other infrastructure activities.iii.due to population pressure availability of water sources have become extremely accute. Now one could easily imagine in other parts of the country.
iv.when the political system becomes thoroughly corrupt how that one could expect a better life.
v.finally just because the the food security bill is great and is a crown in achievements of UPA where they would get food unless farmers are strengthened and water resources are adequate. Prof Sen should keep in mind that the westbengal has been ruined because they never bothered to focus on cultivating the habit of hard work and discipline, at personal and societal level, which resulted sinking in poverty for the past 65 years.
Simple commonsense tells us without the study of economics and great prizes.

I agree. Most of india's problem can be fixed by cultivating morals, ethics, values and love for country in people of all walks of life. Decline in ethics is due to poor Governance, Enforcement. So Govt. should focus on strictly enforcing the law. We have large population who can be employed to speed up delivery of welfare services, justice, education, security etc.

Plunging rupee continues to overburden the common man, and the declining standard of our government is doing the
same from past so many years. It’s time that we choose progress and support Sh. Narendra Modi @narendramodi
with #NaMo4PM.

UPA and the economic consequences of Amartya Sen

For a nation to grow economically (yes with equality), people like this communist thinker must keep off. Freebies can only encourage lethargy. Instaed of such freebies, the people must be empowered to work and earn a living. That way, the nation too would benefit. Unfortunately, politics take precedence over all else in India.

When UPA took over, the economy was growing at a healthy 8-9%..
by Subhash Chandra on Jul 10, 2013 11:45 AM

SONIA GOT THE IDEA TO BRIBE THE VOTERS AND GIVE MONEY TO THE POOR
AND SHE CALLED IT "INCLUSIVE GROWTH"

Money was doled out to the poor in schemes like NREGA , Direct cash transfers and Farm loan waivers
( A lot of it was scammed away to swiss banks)

this led to the Poor spending that money on food etc which led to high inflation .

RBI Saw high inflation as a risk and started inreasing interst rates .

The Interest rates were increased so fast and so high that it destroyed the growth in the econmomy .

So now we are left with low growth and high inflation and a

huge rural population NOT willing TO WORK AND LOOKING FOR FREEBEES FROM THE SYSTEM

Last qarter the economy has just grown by 4.5 %

India is in it's way to become BANKRUPT SOON.

Bond nearing 8% is about the same like Greece and Ireland. Above 7% is RED LINE.

Inclusive growth
by Radhakrishnan on Jul 10, 2013 11:42 AM

Inclusive growth can never be achieved by distributing freebies. The worst thing about handouts is not the negative effect it has on the psyche of the receiver, but the fact that a system struggling with food storage, distribution and identifying and distributing it to those who it is meant for. Instead, if all the projects that were frozen for the last decade are started, it will result in better equity without wounding the pride of those who gain from it.
