FDI is not a panacea but it can fix some of the distribution. However we have to protect the local manufacturing by increasing the local sourcing percentage to above 50%. It is possible that once these giant companies gain entry they will do away with the 30% local sourcing clause or like countless other rules/clauses this one may too remain only on paper.

The middlemen that exploit farmers will be eliminated; gentlemen thos middlemen not all may be crooks and many of them can be SME/ small bizmen. And finally FDI in multi-brand retail has the potential to create a lot of employment; the employment will be low salary labour type job can the economist do such job?

With due respect to the profession (1) Has the Poverty Line not been lowered time and again, to bring people above poverty line? There was a time in 70s when anyone earning less than Rs.25 (or so) was BPL. Then a panel of economists redefined the situation such that "anyone not able to consume enough calories to keep the body and soul together" was BPL. In effect it could mean that all those yet living were above BPL. The dead -off course- were dead and gone. (2)Most of the financial crises have happened with economists at the helm. It is not to blame the Economists' profession in general. But individual's view should not be referred to as economists' view. They differ among themselves, so should be referred by name first, and as economists later.

Dear KacchiDanand Bimaar If the article was opposing FDI then you wouldn't have shared your views in this way i am sure
Mr.Debashish, live in India at Rs.32/- per day. Be a farmer in Rajasthan, Vidarbha. Try to live a year in Mumbai at Rs.10,000/- salary on Renting a space. Then you'll realise what was poverty in 1980 and now.
