Where is the level playing field
by linux linux on Oct 04, 2012 12:04 AM

No trust for the Indian politicians. They will sell their mothers for some money. What is to prevent them from passing laws that favor the big malls and companies in retail?

Fear that FDI will hurt small shops is misguided
by ishwar gurnani on Oct 03, 2012 07:44 PM  | Hide replies

Just as almost all indian banks in Public sector, Co-operative Sector and in Private sector have survived the competition from foreign banks, I am sure our small traders will manage to survive the competition from Foreign shops. The main reason for their survival shall be their very low administrative expenses, which will take care of the difference in their Purchase price. Many small shopkeepers do almost all kinds of jobs in their shops by themselves (Including dusting and cleaning). Therefore it will be difficult for WALLMART etc to compete with them, unless the manage to get more and more favorable policies from our government.

u r just a ignotrant mmoron....look at USA and europe ...how many small retailors and maNufacturing units have survived after these MNC retailors took over ?

root cause of bankruprcy in these countries is the unfetterede import of cheap chjinese products and destruction of small retailors and manufacturing jobs...

Indian consumers!!
by Sudeeptya Sarkar on Oct 03, 2012 01:29 PM

Indians are obscenely voracious consumers as compared to any other nationalities in the world. The delayed flights due to excess luggage from Bangkok and Singapore to Indian cities are simple but best examples of obscenity of Indian consumerism. Hope their obscene greed will be satisfied through FDIs in retail and it will lead to reducing embarrassment for India in overseas/overseas airports. Populist policies will only ehance the obscene greed of Indian consumers. Hope the FDIs will put an end to this luxury goods -starved Indians behaving shamelessly in overseas.

The danger of Retail FDI
by Open your eyes on Oct 03, 2012 01:10 PM

By allowing FDI in Retail we are not finishing off the small retail stores but the farmers. The small retailers will start buying wholesale from Wal-Mart, which is like a large wholesaler. Since most of the food items will come from countries subsidizing the agriculture, their food items will cost less. China may also be the largest source of these food items. This will lead to more farmer suicides. Finally our agricultural self-sufficiency will be wiped off. If we ever try to wage a war on Pakistan, then China or US can arm-twist us and stop the food supplies. So our brave soldiers will die either fighting or with hunger. This is the bane of Manmohan-economics. And I haven’t stated the backdoor entry for GM foods yet.

Depends on how the shops are allowed
by shlok on Oct 03, 2012 12:55 PM

All these mega retailers have a concept of bigger stores on the edge of cities and smaller express stores on the streets which only carry essential items similar like a kirana store but slightly bigger.. it is the latter that would affect the small retail shops.. it is the accessibility that matters and if they are accessible even on major/minor streets that would be a concern for shops..

wrong figures given by the economists
by brian crasto on Oct 03, 2012 12:32 PM  | Hide replies

The poverty level has not fallen but it has remained at 70%. I have got an article appearing in Times of Indian. The government is trying to peg BPL at Rs 32 per day to fudge figure. With rising inflation the lives of people have become worse. Kiranas will survive at any cost. One need not fear FDI in retail

Now the new definition if india for above poverty line is not Rs. 32, but a person who owns a cylinder is above poverty line bcos a person who earns Rs. 32 per day will spend his sal in buying a cylinder and live the whole month by drinking half a bottle of mineral water. No need to eat food. So why FDI and stores

Mera Bharat mahan and mere desh ke politicians usse si bhi mahan.
