cities below one million population will be served by their e-retailers having their godowns/shops in one million population cities. and astonishingly why we are just talking about grocery and do not count general store items, stationery , confectionery, gift shop, sports goods, toys, garments, luggage, crockery, kitchenware, furnishing goods, hardware, sanitary ware, electric goods, white goods, electronic items, literature books/magazines,etc.?
Each country is so unique that we cannot easily predict the success or failure of retailers here, based on outside examples. Farmers from West bengal to Punjab have benefited from the presence of Pepsi , ITC etc ,so trying out this across some limited cities in willing States may be the best way to assess.
In India anyway, the majority are not going to go to a far off outlet by car, stand in long lines and load up for a month. So, big retailing may be a limited success only , where mainly farmers benefit.
The small outlets have anyway survived the onslaught of Birlas, Reliance, Future Group etc,so why would they not manage if the foreigners come in?

While I carry no candles for the corrupt and incompetent Congress party, the opposition to FDI in retail is nothing but opportunistic politics by the main opposition BJP and this commie from Waste Bengal, Mamata Banerjee.
Farmers, traders have to form small societies and work towards thwarting any sort of perils this policy would bring about. Its time the middle and lower class bury their differences on linguistic/ caste/ creed basis and act in cohesion. Also the elite people need to encourage this activity. Else we might be in for more societal issues that have erupted since our Independence.
1.USA is 12 Trillion US dollars economy 2.China is also more than 8 Trillions dollars economy after that there are others
india is just about 11th place with 1.76 trillion dollars us
But if we stall or slip below 11th position
for 1.2 billion people ,there is welfare schemes subsidies etc
so huge bills and money earned is less
Our Dreams of a BREAK OUT NATION will fade away
To get those Global Trade dollars and earn revenue and Break into the TOP 3 economy
we need to do some prerequisites simply by staying put we will not get anywhere at all
so unless we are 4 or 6 trillion dollars Economy
we will not create space to Fund Pensions ,subsidies and welfare schemes and still allocate Funds to Education ,science ,housing etc
so we have to COMPETE and it is only in our best interest to do that we also need to allow LOKPAL National Judicial commission etc as well as Upgrade Core Infra sect inside India otherwise we will not get anyhwere we will not use those Demographics put to use

we must not be Timid and fearful
we must belive in our YOUNG people
I just read that second Generation British Indians are coming to Mumbai to start business or work here
if they left UK to be in Mumbai that too leaving their first gen parents in UK ,you can sense the SELF CONFIDENCE
SELF CONFIDENCE is very important our timidity should not put brakes on our YOUNG generation
they must be allowed to unleash their creativity and become Entrepreneurs
I respect Bapu and it has the context
But shutting doors with timidity and Fear is the worst thing to do I think it will stall Indias Economic progress
so yes at some Point FDI in Retail has to happen and we should be ready for it like I said we should set the House in order neither americans or europeans or chinese will wait for us
we must do it both (our house in order)and opening up
Otherwise we would have made our Younger generation tied up

when we close Capital accumulation will lead to Black Money which will take Flight out of Indias borders
so Robust economy inside our own borders is vital
to make those Tatas ,ambanis ,mahindra not only keep re investing but also allow genpact ,Infy etc to bid and win contracts domestically keeping Service sect robust and alive as well

1991- 92 reforms saw LICENSE RAJ dismantled yet remants of Corruption remain in the system
we are getting better
we are having E-Governance E-tenders and Contracts
the above are encouraging if we could get LOKPAL ,citizen charters National Judicial commision electrol reforms in steps and also open up Economy
I see no need for Panic it is GOOD for us and country good for our Young people
so we all should seek change and move together both Government and citizens as well
with proper regulation and core Infra we can compete
if we could compete in IT sector ?
if ISRO can fare better and launch Foreign satleiites?
we also should do our Homework and compete in Retail (power sect reforms ,core Trunk Infra like Freight rail and storage space etc)
other wise we will stall at 1.76 trillions us dollars economy
where will we get money for subsidies? welfare schemes ? by 2050 we will add more aged populace so will we have enough pension ?
can we fund helathcare ,education and science missions?
That is why we must Fight and Compete and win the battle
we can win but with proper regulation ,reforms and core Infra
I do not like to isolate and stagnate ?
where will we create millions of jobs?
where will we create Eco systems that will spur domestic industry
Imagine we have better supply chain logistics inside India then our IT service sect can bid and supply solutions our small scale and medium scale entrepreneurs Innovate and create new Products
Quality improves when that happens we can Export and earn Revenues as well
so Competition is Good when done properly
so UPA is good and eligible to open up as of now ? No
Can we Trust BJP led NDA govt to do core infra and regulate and then open up ? YES
tHEY DID golden quadrilateral they did Gujarat state govt power sect reforms
so they have some starts like rajiv rudy and Yashwanth Sinha

Today Mahindra competes with Suzuki ,Tatas ,and others as well ----- likewise if we get the regulation right Core infra power tariffs right ,availabilty right our Freight rail correct
delhi Mumbai industrial corridor on time
i see no reason why we should fear FDI IN RETAIL we can compete with them
For all questions his only reply is that conditions in India are different. So does this justify inviting a monster to your house saying that your house is different. Shame on these mittals. There is not even an iota of pretense left and its all too clear that these are American (Walmart) agents who will just loot India.
Dear fellow Indians ------- Just like Lord Siva has poison in his Throat bear this poison of UPA govt why ?
because of Secular vs psuedo secular our Mulayams ,lalus and mayas will not Vote for No Confidence motion against UPA Govt
If it was UK OR USA or Canada or even Aust UPA govt has been long gone and elections called for
UPA govt is surviving because BJPs Hindutva forces are opposed by sri Mulayams ,Sri Lalus and smt Mayawathi This is a very heavey price INDIA as a nation is paying
As an Indian born I want UPA to fall too many scams But thanks to BJPs vs others politics UPA survives and dramas continue
YES dear fellow indians LORD SIVA in mt kailash might be doing Siva Tandavam he too does not like but what can we do ?
Our BJP will not change ? neither lalus or mulayams will change?
For any question on job loss, stores closing down he simply says 'Indians doesnt buy much' 'Indian real estate costly' 'Indians doesnt go 20 miles' 'Indians wont buy from big shops' etc.... if so then why you want to open your stores in India if you are unsure Indians buy from Walmart or not? You want to do charity in India, is it?
Rediff could have asked this question in the end!! and see his reaction.
