Another Scam ?

Why should it cost that much when at far less this cost the same distance is covered by other tunnel projects ?

please put some comparative costs of similar projects to support your point. usually people do not have an idea of cost involved in such projects. I am willing to accept your point, but more data needed for comparison.

That is fine, but look at the cost ... a whopping Rs 3,720 for a mere 9 km stretch! Could this money not have found better use? What on earth is this expense proving to the world - that even India can blast a hill to dig a tunnel? Silly. There is better use for that money in this country.

It will be paid back by all the fuel and time saved and also less spending on emergency services due to accidents on the old road. Hope they do not put a toll on it.

The cost is because of the terrain involved . They have to blast through solid rock safely and place supports before building the road . Besides , this saves 27 kms which in fuel savings itself can compensate for the cost of building in a few years . As an added bonus , now people who could not run bussinesses in those areas due to the difficult road involved will now be able to run their industries better and bring in more investment .

I suppose you have never lived in hilly areas.. So, I can forgive you for your ignorance and arrogance. What is the better use of Money than providing a comfortable passage to people who everyday have to deal with (actually risk their lives) a treachrous mountain road, which could be blocked due to landslide anytime.
Wake up. After a very long there is something constructive happening in Kashmir, which could symbolize hope for the people there.
You certainly wouldn't mind when govt. decides to spend money on building better roads in your city...

Force multiplier

This very important link can be termed as a force multiplier as land and air forces at Udhampur can be well supplied and positioned rapidly. More such projects which increase our defense preparedness must be undertaken on the highest priority.

well said... it is very important for us to build this kind of infrastructure in JnK. I am also hoping that JnK railway project comes through and Srinagar and Leh are soon linked by railways with the rest of India. Once this is done, I do expect govt to focus more on similar projects in Arunachal Pradesh, where the infrastructure build up on the Chineese side is just huge. At the end of the day any postive news on Indian infrastructure development lights up a day.

Maybe , but if we oppose all projects because we believe that there will be corruption involved , the country will never progress . Its better to move forward and correct mistakes as they come rather than to be static because you fear mistakes .

Bloggers in below posts are crying for waste of money. Pls be aware of facts first
1) Not only it cuts distance to 1/4 but also provide stratgical link up of diffrent part of J&K
2) During winters the longer path is Snowed out,,so tunnel will make it posible to maintain essential contact/supplies
Only regret its bit late

Strange is the discussion. Everything is not based upon only cost factor. Defence preparedness, Social comforts & uplift of people & savings after construction have to be weighed. We must go for such projects in J & K & North east very fast. We are already very late.

It is matter of great pride for building this tunnel by Borde Roads (National Highway)and also Indian Railways building a railway tunnel in J&K. J& K is integral part of India! We have sacrificed a lot and saved the it being grabbed by Pakistan. Newer mind for few J7K muslims who are pro Pak.We donot mind laying down our lives in years to come but give up J&K. It is our teritory our brothers and sisters in I&K, Ladakh.-Dharanendra
