Improving education system in India
by Satya Vyas on Oct 31, 2011 01:49 PM

Education is an important part of human life improving capability to face survival threats and quality of life. The problem with any new effort is that it takes time to give results for evaluation. In India, the problem has been with our evaluation system and we have not been transparent, fair and balanced in evaluation of our system. Hence, there has been no system of feeding back the learning into to the system. The liberalization has totally relied on the market forces to ensure quality and competition and spawned large number of poor quality institutes. While the government, again due to lack of accountability, has remained a poor performer at all tiers of education system. What we need is strong, autonomous self sustaining rating agencies for different streams of education. The corporates and venture capitalists would do a great job if an array of such strong institutions are established in place of state supported UGC or other accrediting agencies. It would be good if the government stayed away from directly providing education and wasting huge sums on an un-accounatble and corrupt system. There could be cash transfers to the needy allowing them a right to choose a good school. All government school infrastructure be let out to private entrepreneurs at a nominal rent. Competition will ensure cheap education. This will also help government reduce tax on goods and services and tame inflation which will benefit poor the most. Competition commission be strengthened.

AT LAST IT IS BACK TO SQUARE ONE
by pooja wadhwani on Oct 31, 2011 01:47 PM

It started well with points which truelly mean what education should be, it must be equipping you with power of knowledge and honning ur talent ,unfortunaltely education end up with only objective of getting a JOB,Article started talks on new idea ,nurturing talent and innovation, Knowledge based system
but ended again on ways and means to have Army of Quality people who are ready for becoming employee

The big business houses are not troubled on people not trying to create job ,their real trouble is that they are not getting Highly skilled people at low cost..

All they want is not revamp of education system to produce job creator but to produce
quality Servant's at cheaper cost and in plenty

QUALITY OF EDUCATION
by s narayanan on Oct 31, 2011 01:47 PM

When the focus is on minting money and not raising the educational standards, when business schools are being run more like a school business, when the media is used for promoting sub-standard educational institutions and courses, when extraneous considerations outweigh the genuine ones in awarding internal grades which is in the hands of the corrupt institutions and the management, when qualified and competent teachers are lacking... the situation is bound to witness further deterioration in the days ahead.

When governmental aids are being pocketed by the undeserving, when funds for the purpose are diverted by middlemen; with corruption rampant at every level, the malady will persist without any respite or relief.

Cramming

I am disgusted at the people who approve the course study content. It is so much. Let the kids be happy.

1) Purpose of education institutes is to impart knowledge, not to label the students according to their ability to cram

2) Let the kids choose their subjects. Let the subjects be common till, say 6th standard. After that let the kid choose his subjects. Let there be only 4 subjects to study. If a kid wants to be a writer, let him choose languages. If a kid wants to be a doctor/engineer, let him choose maths and science. Why push subjects that one is not supposed/ able to learn?

In this manner, students would be persuaded to be experts in their chosen area of work, rather than cram. They would choose such vocation further in their lives to become experts, rather than "General Clerks".

The path of education, let it be happy for those involved, rather than cut throat competition. Let the student choose and do what he loves most.

Adult education

I think it was in the 1990s in Andhra Pradesh there was something called RATRI BADI meaning night school for the older people who were working in the fields and farms during the daytime. This program was doing a very good job. In one of the books there was a brief information about the ill effects of drinking liquor. One village woman was saw this and asked the teacher about liquor and it ill effects and she got a lot of information. After that she got together with other women and thrashed the guy who sells liqour in the village and with that came prohibition in Andhra Pradesh. The movement caught on to other places and it was like a forest fire. This brief history is because politicians in out country do not want the voters to be educated. If they are educated they will lose their power and all the other trappings that come with power. If anything has to happen, we the people who are writing in these blogs need to do some thing. Like each one teach ten. We can do it if we put our minds. Think about this guys and girls. Cheers.

Somehow there is no straight solution. What happened in AP is a good example.. But imagine it's a 100% literate state like Kerala that has a huge drunk population....
