Well, but...

If what has been claimed is true (650-700 ml petrol from 1 kg plastic) and if the process of such production is reasonably cheap then such discovery deserves nothing less than a nobel prize. However, most likely there are certain ifs and buts and so this news has not spread like wildfire.

Also, Oil companies (big foreign ones) will do everything in their power to decimate any such discovery. Even the Government of India may not encourage such discovery because it would lead to cheap fuel and therefore lesser tax collection.

In short, it would be foolish to be optimistic and dream about cheap petrol from plastic (or from anything else) in the near future.

Conversion at what cost??
by swapnadip on Nov 17, 2011 01:49 AM

After all, the conservation of energy is of prime importance! During pyrolysis of plastics into petrol, high temperatures are required. If more fuel like coal or gas is used get this temperature to achieve the plasma state than the total production of petrol then I am afraid this technology is of no use!!

Now he works for Reliance in the reverse Engineering division researching how to turn petrol to water. This would increase the sales of petrol.
