Lallu was better than Mamta
by Altaf Rahman on Jan 29, 2011 01:37 PM  | Hide replies

Guys,
I am not talking abt Mamta-WB politics. I am talking abt financial health of Railways.
Lallu though looks comical, talks comical pulled Railways out of losses where as Mamta again pushed it into losses.
The proof of pudding is in its eating. Financial figures are there for every one to see. LALLU SCORES OVER MAMTA.
If Lallu is culprit of diverting most of Railway projects to Bihar, Mamta is no better. She diverted all projects to WB. In this regard LALLU AND MAMTA TIE.
Lallu gave socially downthrodden people like rag pickers in railway stations some dignity by giving them employee status. Tens of thousands of poorest gained dignity and steady, regular income. Mamta did nothing of any sort. She was busy politicking.
However I support Mamta in WB politics. People there need some change from Dragon rule.
I feel Mamta should be made WB CM and Lallu to be made Railway Minister.

Altaf - I don't agree with you on Lalu. He was not only comical, made comical errors also. He put safety of millions of passengers on risk by employing incompetent people (like ragpickers) as gangmen. Just because they are downtrodden doesn't mean they deserve employment in railways. They can be helped in some other way. Indian railway stations are so dirty. The passengers make them dirtier while the railway employees don't work.

LALU was a chor and incompetent. His figures for Railways were all eyewash. Mamata is incompetent and opportunistic. We mustn't forget both are after all politicians.
Mamata has to learn how to work rising above regionalism and personal agenda.
But Lalu is surely a curse to India and the people of Bihar have already proved it to us.

Abby,

The report says Railways have increased their earnings by 5%, not their profits. There is a fundamental difference between earnings and profit which you must understand before posting. Being Mamata supporter doesn't mean you will forget the basics. I am a Mamata supporter too but I'm not blind to see that she has been overlooking her responsibilities as the Railway Minister for a while.

Regarding Sankrail,I can say this land was taken by the WB Govt only 25 years back. Then no one shouted about rehabilitation and a job in return.for 25 years this land was there barren. When Mamaat started her project, people there started to see lights of hope but this worthless CPM Govt started howling about compensation.Where were they when they themselves took away this land..??Everone now inows that CPM will not work and will now alow others to work too.

WB elections should have been much earlier in national interest

if Mamta wins only Bengal suffers ....rest of India benefits as she'll get out of the Rlys ministry, and if she looses both Bengal n India gain as neither she can be the CM of Bengal nor she'll be tolerated for another moment by Cong at the Centre!

railways needs to learn from telecom
by swapnil patil on Jan 29, 2011 12:52 PM  | Hide replies

Moving frieght by railways makes great economic and environmental sense. However due to shortsighted policies, railways keeps increasing freight astronomically for certain items (such as Iron ore) forcing corporates to use Trucks for transporting these bulk commodities.

They should reduce the rates and increase volumes and thereby make more money overall.
Those profits can then be used for funding expansion projects.

let us remembers Railways job is not to do charity. It is too important an infrastructure to be allowed to fail.

The Minister is bleeding the railways dry
by swapnil patil on Jan 29, 2011 12:48 PM  | Hide replies

The Minister is bleeding the railways dry by populistic spends in Bengal and noneconomic stupid shortsighted policies.

The Solution is to privatise the railway or make it into a Listed entity(or multiple entities for competition) with "professional management" for eg like L&T.

The Govt should reduce its stake to Zero in the listing and induct a board of directors of eminent retired corporate leaders like Nilenkani, Gurcharan das, etc

As long as politicians use such org for short sighted benefits, we will all suffer.

pls check and get ur facts right ..... during Lallu there was gr8 impetus to bulk freight which accounts for over 70% railways income ... during mamta the freight earnings have taken a beating due to poor performance of the Railways, it took 8 months for a rake of potato to reach kolkata frm punjab ...and nobody is there to look into it. Every body at Rlys is busy attending political rally in the name of Rlys by Mamta. Even safety and cleanliness is the worst in Mamta's regime ... only a blind can ignore these and say your Mamta is performing....Sorry if it hurts u but it is the truth!

Give her the reins of TCS, Infosys or Wipro. Even they will start incurring losses.

Like aviation, better open railways to private sector. Jet, Indigo, Kingfisher will start their trains.

Dasji ..use a bit of common sense ..just check from where this earning has come from..inefficient monopoly with highest freight rate in the world and still not able to finance any major project... do your analysis comparing with any rail system in the world and u will get the answer to the 'deficit' im talking abt

Maybe if she wins in WB also she won't alow someone like Basudev Acharya to come and sit in Railys standing comitee as during last 26 years, these commies could hardly do any new projects for the railways.NThey wwere not even botherd what is happeneing in Railways.
