If the author wants to be fair he should compare the average earnings of a person in a country with the price of petrol.

What is objective of this article? congress propaganda?
by Rajendra Gupta on Apr 17, 2011 10:50 PM  | Hide replies

What is purpose of this comparison. The international rates of various types of crude is same for all countries in open market. The refining charges are also similar range.Hence the difference is obviously in inward and outward transport costs and of course the heavy taxation by thief governments of some countries like India.
The author should give petrol price to per capita income ratios instead. For example Rajasthan rs 64/30000(PA).India is worst in world
Then he and the congress goins both will be exposed.
Stop treating Indians as idiots.
Shamelessness is not smartness

rediff must now stop acting as coingress agent.

that is right...you should see the percapita income and the cost of oil. NORDIC countries have percapita income of more than 10 lakhs, where as in India it is a mere 40000. the difference is 20 times. even turkey it is 8 times more. so comparison is not correct. Also purchasing power being more for India, we pay ultimately more than all these other countries...except the war ravaged eritrea.

china has 3 times more purchasing power per dollar than US. so in practice US pays just 15 rupees for what china pays 47 rupees.

Direct conversion of the cost of petrol in other countries to Indian rupees is stupid.
Purchasing Power Parity of the currency should be considered while making such comparisons.

Petrol would cost 50 paise per liter
by correct on Apr 17, 2011 08:48 PM  | Hide replies

Petrol would cost 50 paise per liter if there is no corruption in India and if swiss money is brought back but most of India is run by theives so it is surprising the cost is only Rs 61

no i guess what he meant that if petrol is subsidized it is possible to sell at 50 paise per litre. (assuming that India uses 10000 crore litres of oil per year, even if one scam money is directed for petrol it will work out even free).

the money going in black will be able to make the country much more welfare state and efficient.

Due to coalition dharma, our beloved PM can not take any action on the petrol mafia, headed by sharad pawar, and we r paying for the pilferage,.
due to power hungry politician who travels with 5 cars, with free petrol from govet,we r paying for their luxary and arrogant attitude.
for eg.last month when MAYAVATI,U P cheap minister, came to NOIDA,she was travelling with 22 cars trailing behind and infront of her car.
the wrong design and mal administered national highway dept.makes the vehicles wait for 1 to 2 hrs at the toll gates to pay the fees,on highway.recently,Gurgaon raised the toll fees to rs.21 for cars and did not have change to handle the toll payees. result..3-4 hrs wait to cross the toll for 20,000 vehicles.IMAGINE THE PETROL/DIESEL/WASTED IN IDLING TO KEEP THE ac ON.
THE ROAD CONDITION ,in U P and Bihar is so bad ,vehicle can not travel at more than 20 kmph for about 100 kms, in every 300 kms stretch. imagine the fuel waste and the time wasted on roads, inhaling dust and fumes.
unless the GOVT wakes upto the ground realities, and work out a solution soon, you and i,and our grand children will be paying thro'our nose for the benefit of the politicians.

The public sector oil companies currently
by piri on Apr 17, 2011 01:45 PM

are loosing upwards of Rs. 6/- per litre of Petrol and Rs. 12/- per litre of Diesel sold !

Owing to election compulsions, the union govt. has not allowed the oil companies to raise prices for the last couple of months. The finance ministry has refused to back up the PSUs with any more subsidies either in the form of direct budgetary support or what are known as 'Oil-bonds' than it is already bearing. The upstream companies such as ONGC and OIL are already bearing a full one-third of the total under-recoveries and will not be able to bear any more of the burden.

Considering all these facts, the oil ministry has asked the three major PSUs (as well as ONGC's refinery - MRPL) to hike prices steeply in the less sensitive products such as furnace oil, LSHS, naptha, bitumen, industrial grade kerosene, special products such as hexane, MTO, etc. and also in the entire spectrum of lubricants !

Owing to this step, the industrial sector is going to be hit hard as it will bear additional burden in lieu of the enormous subsidy being extended for Diesel, PDS kerosene, Petrol and cooking gas.

Come May and it is certain that there will be a substantial hike in Diesel, Petrol and cooking gas prices !

wrong comparison over oil price worldwide
by sanjay basak on Apr 17, 2011 01:25 PM  | Hide replies

The article on the oil price worldwide highlights wrong comparison for the readers. Rediff must analyse data not on price but on the power to purchase oil. Lets compare for Norway, average earning of an officer remains same interms of rupees and krone in both the country eg.40,000 per month (consider 1kr~8 Rs).
Now average petrol price per lit in Norway (12-14 kr) while in India it is ~Rs60.
That tells the story.

by individual on Apr 17, 2011 01:17 PM

untill and unless India will cross turkey or highest rate, indian govt or paid media will keep on telling that India is still very low compared to other developing countries but these shameless people will not see even neighbouring country pakistan, where after all failure, they were managed to keep the price Rs. 44, compare to indias Rs. 65 which is30% lower than indias rate!
