Well, i dont understand the way the price of petrol in other countries are calculated especially in countries where the price is so high. There is no information on when was the last increase of petrol price in those countries and how much was it. What was the tax component in those countries where the price of the petrol is high. The author must answer aforesaid question to justify the petrol price hike in India.

He should also give per capita income of Indians and in those countries side by side prices

The point is my dear friend, those countries who sell their product to us does not bother about our per capita income. Prices are fixed based on demand by oil selling countries (OPAC). So, my point is who are the countries who has the ability to strike a good deal with OPAC countries. Are OPAC countries fixing the base price for oil across the world. What is the internal demand of each country and what is the percentage of demand can be met by them without importing from foreign countries. These are some of the question which author has to answer along with my previous set of question to understand the contemporary pricing policies of each country.

You think if the ruling party were the BJP or the communist, the petrol would be FREE???
I am not sure whether these rediff guys have taken account of PPP(Purchasing power Parity) of that country or not. Just by converting into INR seems illogical & out of world.

Ashu- u are correct, absolutely. The analysts andthe Rediff joker must understand yr point. it is not the price of the product only, but thepurchasing power - in terms of - per capita income- must be taken and then only clear picture will emerge

Hello everyone. Putting up the rates in INR and informing us that the petrol rates are high is not exactly the right way. Living in Sweden, here if I convert the INR to SEK, it comes to about 13 SEK. That is cheaper than the cheapest loaf of bread. We need to know what the people exactly feel about 1 litre of petrol costing 13 SEK. This should be done across all countries. That will be more reliable.

Petrol is an international commodity unlike currencies & local services which vary depending upon the state of the economy, etc. Am not sure how it would help to know what people feel about 1 liter of petrol. Even in Venezuala I'm sure there would be people cribbing on the price of petrol. The table rediff has published was very nice when converting all petrol prices into rupees so that we can understand where we stand relative to other countries. For once I commend rediff for this article.

He is not asking for price of tomottor, but saying Americans pay for 1 ltr petrol somewhat equivalent what we pay for 1 kg. tomottow.

SP, please do not suspend sense here :-) What you're doing by doing a direct conversion of dollars to rupees in terms of earnings is a very common mistake. Just so you get it, you'd earn in dollars there but will also spend in dollars. To set matters straight, a 500ml bottle of water could be as much as $3 or more, in fact. What you have to bear in mind is to think in terms of PPP or Purchasing Power Parity which defines what commodities and services can be purchased with $1 (or any other value) and the equivalent in the other currency, in this case, INR (so about Rs44.odd).Ergo, you DO not earn 10 times there in PPP terms.
How come there is such a big difference(20 bucks) in petrol prices between India and Pakistan ? Pakistan is not a oil producing or oil exporting nation, then why this difference ?
Re: Petrol Cheap in Pakistan ?
by Amused Commentator on Apr 12, 2011 03:45 PM
Its how you get taxed on oil, my friend, in our country. Those guys tax it less... sad but true!
Re: Petrol Cheap in Pakistan ?
by william lobo on Apr 12, 2011 03:10 PM
pakistani rupee is also lower value than Indian rupee so ultimate cost difference is about Rs.30 i.e. they sell petrol in pakistan for almost half the price in India. How is it possible??

Rediff has already converted all the amounts into INR. Open your eyes and brain.

if the cost of oil is same for all the non-oil producing countries then why is there a price difference (in non-oil producing countries)?
