author is a babu sitting in the comfort of EU penning useless articles.

Does he even know the facts. For example every year close to two million children under five die from lack of care - ONE EVERY 15 SECONDS.

How about some real actions and sound policies Mr Ambassador that make lives of people better.

GDP does not matter. It is the quality of life that a nation provides to its citizens that is important. You are in the EU, you should know better.

by Loga on Mar 31, 2010 06:51 PM

India is capable to achieve more then 10% of GDP growth because if in recession India can grow 7% GDP then in booming time can reach 10% easily.Indian economy was grown rapidly close to 8% GDP in 2009.
Whole world economy will have a roller coaster ride in negative growth ,Indias Exports to US are a relatively small % of the Indian economy because of this Indian Economy has sustained itself inspite of global recession.
The savings rate in India is around 35% and the demand is consumer driven not state driven unlike China.India is capable to achieve more then 10% of GDP growth because if in recession India can grow 7% GDP then in booming time can reach 10% easily.
And India become No1 in BPO and Software exporter in the world himself and because of his talented Engineers and most of the top Indian software export companies in India are Indian, Made in India.

No chance, there is no consenses on population control, discipline, corruption, employment, terrorism, total politics is based on vote bank, national issues are meaningless. Caste based, region based, politicians are flourshing and dictating. We do not even think in terms of drastic reforms to suit our requirement. Police and court could not win the confidence. SWARAJ is far away.

Your pessimism is striking. U are living in a world of past. Wake up, what the report says is true, India has every chance to be a great power, for it is destined to be one and no power can stop its onward march. This has been predicted and will happen. 21st century will be Indian one... the change will come in mid of this century

Western model
by Dev on Mar 31, 2010 05:06 PM  | Hide replies

FAULT in western model is that any growth is equated to rise in property value. 1% economy growth figure is quickly followed by property hike by maybe 5%.
$1m median home prices in many suburbs in western countries is quite common.
but the catch is that with avg sal.ary of worker ,you might have to pay for 50 years.ie, 2 generations !
value in property prices is good thing because it sustains small towns etc. but we as indians, really need to avoid this sort of terrible scenario ..of paying mortgage for 50 -60 years.
I,REALLY HOPE THAT INDIA AVOIDS THIS MODEL !
I have no probs with rich people buying $10m or $100m houses but the sort of widespread manipulation of real estate prices that is happening in West should be avoided.
ofcourse we need something else to be able to hold value...maybe stocks or some new financial instruments are needed, too.

I think we should follow the Singapore model where 85% of the population lives in Housing Board flats. Of course, it is difficult to transfer the model of a small country to a large country, but India needs large scale construction of affordable public housing.

is 1/3rd of pay transferred to pay govt housing flat or something? but yeah, the singaporeans are quite clever.i agree govt. needs to get into large scale public housing.
and also hope if they do ,they dont build the ghetto block like structures.also suburbs should have a max allowable number of flats which should not be exceeded

u get a decent house in US anywhere between 100,000 dollars to 500,000 dollars which typical indians go for in some smaller cities....he will be drawing an average salary of 65000 dollars per annum to 1 lakh per annum....it is still better than in india if u calculate ratio-wise to clear up the total ammount!!!! imagine a salaried person of 10,000 per month trying to buy a house of 5 lakh and how long it will take to clear up!!!!

Salary of Rs 10,000 per month!!! You must be joking. It is difficult to survive on such a salary, let alone buy a flat or house.

what sort of concocted figures are these!!!! hahahahahaah.....is growth some sort of a railway track where there are no deviations, twists and turns!!!! US is currently 4 times china's GDP!!!! by 2030, with a mundane calculation of 5.6% and US's 2.7%, china is supposed to overtake US!!!!!! hahahahahahaha....JOKE OF THE MILLENIA!!! is there any match between US/Japanese customers and chinese customers!!!!!! Jana has been having 1.1% growth rate for the last 30 years and china and india have been having these for the last 60 years!!!! have they ever been able to come anywhere near it????? it is high time thse econostrologers take a break from such third-grade calculations!!!!

Hey dumb head..its average growth rate and it clearly states in terms of per-capita income the west would be in front of us. And for China has having more then 8% growth rate for last 15 years and India more then 6% for 6-7 years...

even i am talking abt GDP and not per-capita here!!!! india and china have had a consistent 4-8% for the last 40 years!!!! and japan which was in ruins at the end of WW2 had a growth rate of about 15% for the first 15-20 years and then stabilized to below 5% and now at 1.1%!! any developed country will have a very low growth rate cos it is already developed and the growth will be very marginal!!! many of the under-developed countries have a growth rate of more than 20%!!!! growth rate is not a sign of financial wellbeing!!!! as and when the GDP amount increases, the GDP growth rate will start dipping u fool!!!! it is not like today, u have 1 trillion with 6% growth rate and at the end of year, lets assume 1 trillion and 60 million will be the GDP amount....meaning 1 trillion and 60 million becomes the benchmark for the next year!!!!! do u still think it will be 6%!!!!! no way, it will dip to lesser than 6%!!! the more and more the GDP amount increases, the GDP percentage will start to dip cos the benchmark keeps increasing!!!! in order to sustain this, india and china need to have innovative products like US or Japan!!!!! do they???? NEVER!!!! they have to sell the same old sh1t to the customers.....it will be maximum old wine in a new bottle!!!!

Depends!
by shiva on Mar 31, 2010 04:42 PM  | Hide replies

The headline embarasses even the hardened Indophile, if any! It means to the exclusion of all else, including the fire-spewing dragon!
US is taken as past! But they have been the best though beholden to China now. They are in a tight embrace, like a recent cobra/python one. The cameraman left fearing for his own safety! Yes, US is the biggest debtor & China their banker! Like in personal lives, sometimes the debtor calls the shots!

US has resources to bounce back & is an open society attracting the best brains from everywhere. They can become energy independent, the wind energy from Mid-west is huge and also gas from shale-rocks. They are likely to cut losses from overseas follies & then they can just have plain sailing.

China overattains all targets, be it wind, nuclear, solar, infrastructure, tourism etc. We are the opposite! They are top-down, we have been bottom-down! Then they have a way to deal with those who stand in their way. We have tender stomachs! Unless we can discipline ourselves than take our existence as a joke, it is hard to understand such optimism! Just like the share price goes up & even the CEO is surprised! Our neighbourhood is rough, pulling us down whenever we take a step forward.

If we take a united stand on critical issues & pursue them whoever is in power, then we have a chance to get ahead. Still the headline is just too much, resonates april 1!

good analysis..

our problem is we take the gandhian ahimsa too seriously when we have to deal with foreign terrorism, locally bred terrorism, corruption in gov, public sector and everywhere else..we even take our hard won freedom/ democracy very leisurely..

we got a break as we had monocultured a lot of "engineers" by our gov subsidized and self financed Eng colleges.. when the world needed SW people in large numbers, we got into the slot easily.. It is like America still importing cheap Chinese made plastic crap, even when they know the negativities associated with it..
