Why India had no choice but to hike fuel prices
by Kashi Gowlikar on Jun 28, 2010 02:55 PM

Deregulation is good but selective deregulation/deregulation when the when the inflation is high is bad. Before deregulation is followed, allow perfect competition and remove/minimise taxes. Do the same for all other products.

can they reduce taxes on petro products.
by Ratnesh Shukla on Jun 28, 2010 02:53 PM  | Hide replies

In other countries, petro prices are much lesser than india due to less taxes.....can indian govt. reduce taxes if they are going to deregulate the prices and didn't going to provide subsidy...because there is more than 50% of the price increment is due to taxes.

Stud : Could not agree with you. The taxes they take and for that you enjoy more privileges. Furthermore we also have flat 30% tax which is just 10% less than USA. Now compared to US imagine the price we pay down here.
Petrol prices in no wway can be more than 25 - 27 Rs in India after taking into consideration of profit.
India on the other hand do produce crud e oil in quite a good quantity and import of oil in its case is much lower if you compare with Malaysia.

Deregulation of petrol prices is a positive step.Itshould now do the same for diesel also.It is a fallacy that diesel is being used by poor farmers. In rural India rich landlords use diesel for tractors and tubewells;in urban India for luxury cars and SUVs.

It will reduce national fiscal deficit. We should learn to consume only what we can afford. Hopefully it will encourage people to go infor public/pooled transport and thus save this valuable natural resource and reduce traffic congestion.

It will cost 8-15Rs/L and how it will be so expensive here! Just because of Taxes. If you deduct all taxes from Oil, it will cost only 25-30Rs!

by Rajesh Bhagwat on Jun 28, 2010 02:45 PM  | Hide replies

whereas the Bogus & Jobless Party (BJP) and inc were about to sell of the Public Sector Oil Co.s to ambani and tata!!! it was great luck of the nation that the public bludgeoned them with a baseball rod in their heads otherwise shourie and co. were out to sell family silver for buying chocolates! shourie uncle, where are you baba??? not to be seen ever since the Not Doing Anything alliance lost elections??? congress is far better than those family silver selling bunch of foxes. let me make it clear that i dont belong to ANY political party or ism. i am a common indian citizen. look, you cant expect any govt to pay from the govt exchequer for the fuel you burn. slowly all subsidy has to go so everybody better understand this! by the way, the CONCESSIONS AND SUBSIDIES to SC/ST also were to be withdrawn after 10 yrs that is from 1961! Dr Ambedkar had himself told to stop all concessions and subsidies to SC/ST after 10yrs. what about that!

studu baba, i know what the article is saying. all i'm saying is, the govt truly has no other options but to cut down the subsidy. had the nda govt privatised oil sector, the petrol price would have been more than 100 Rs when crude oil prices toched $140 per barrel, do you understand??? you seem to be in kindergarten... jane do, not your fault.

Babulal....

Chalo, you admitted being Babulal.

Again, all you said is wrong. Congress is doing what the BJP proposed. DEREGULATING THE OIL PRICES, bringing them in sync with the world market.

So now if the OIL touches $ 100 per barrel, expect our prices to be similar.

Get some education dude, Right to Education has been introduced for people like you.

Dont mislead the people.....
by Stud on Jun 28, 2010 02:41 PM  | Hide replies

Yes, BJP proposed the deregulation of Petrol prices and wanted it to be as per market conditions, but why?

To save the Oil Marketing Companies viz Indian Oil, HP , BP etc. Which today are running losses worth lacs of crores thanks to mis management by Congress party.

The point is the timing, with 17% Inflation, what made the Congress say "PEOPLE CAN AFFORD IT".

For the past two years, BJP has been pointing this out the government, Inflation is not coming under control, and Congress goes to the media to tell the people that BJP is anti People.

And give me one good reason why should not BJP take full advantage of this situation?

I have my own doubts that BJP would be able to take any advantage.
Remember the hike in rates of Onion and Salt a few years back? I.N.C. backed businessmen hoarded the onoins and salt packs and blamed BJP that too when BJP was in power.
