But chankaya, even after paying taxes their profits after tax are in 100s of crores. When god has given them so much, they have a duty to help the less previleged in society.

Lopsided India... We literate are to blame
by Great Khali on Jul 14, 2010 02:25 PM  | Hide replies

This is an amazingly sad yet encouraging story. And we the so-called educated, emancipated, liberated middle class are to blame for this state of affairs. We are pleased to sit in AC offices, browse, indulge in the latest fads (social networking, tweeting, partying, intellectual debates, egalitarian complaints about the state of traffic, property prices, corruption, politics, stock market) and think we are a rising power, future of world economy, global power and democratic values. We are not for one moment, content with what we have, never realizing that what we have is more than what one of our poorer neighbours of the maid's family can ever imagine to earn or be.

The story of Shankar puts me to shame. Here I am cussing the government for the slightest of inconveniences, the smallest of let-downs and I read about a boy almost my son's age fending for his younger brothers so that they get a better life. It's so ridiculous.

What I've realized about myself is that the more I know, the more I grow selfish. I know this is true for most of us. If only each one learnt to give as much as we receive, we could do much more. Simple things like helping the maid's kids with their studies?

I also know that our 'elevated status' in society will prevent our egos from doing something so base. After all, isn't this what we are taught in our corporate lives - be ambitious, overachieve, put yourself first, and succeed by hook or crook?

Maybe our success creates more Shank

What I dont understand is when these kind of article are published. Rediff does not give a way for people to help these kids. This is the 3rd article of this nature I read this week. So I am sure rediff is getting page views for it and they make ad money, well on the flip side at least there is the name of the writer who could be contacted.

you are correct!!! Millions of kids in our country are suffering like this. With this kind of poverty prevailing in our country, so called great Ecomonists, Politicians, Ministers, Corporate executives are all bluffing around in the media saying "India will be superpower within 5 years", "India will be Asias No.1 country soon", "India will overtake China in everything very soon", "bla, bla, bla, bla"; These guys are only good in building the castle in the air but doing nothing for our country. Recently our Prime Minister told in a press conference "India will catch & overtake China within 5 years"; unable to control laughing on reading his words.
