Congress game

Stockpile and let food rot. Pamper middlemen and let farmers die. Thus with less farmers and low food output make way for genetically modified food and get kickbacks from big GM food industrialists. Send loot to swiss bank accounts.

Control population else we are doomed
by Narakasur on Dec 21, 2010 01:50 PM

From being a country with less than 400 million people during independence we have now grown to 1.1 billion. 3 times in 50 years is not sustainable. We will soon run out of ideas to feed all the people.

GM foods

India certainly needs GM crops. Scientists all over the world have taken the tests of these crops and found no harm in them, insted they will increase production and quality of the crops as proven with our experience with cotton. The countries like America are using these thechnologies from years. In order to escape pesticidal effects on vegetables we must go for GM crops

Please tell us - in this age of free trade and futures trading in food, why US and the other western nations are not producing GM food/products - particularly brinjals - on their own land to capture the Asian markets! At least in India - as it is apparently worrying Mr. Pawar - brinjal is in severe short supply.

They dont produce because they dont need to. They produce more than they can consume and not like us. They have vast amounts of land for the population which is growing in a very controlled manner unlike ours which is exploding. Do you think we can feed all 1.5 billion in 20 years time with traditional yields. We need to look at increasing the yeilds.

For your kind information, helicoverpa worms have started feeding on GM cotton. So there is no future for GM crops.

GM is always a cat and mouse game. Because of the excessive use of pesticides by the previous generation, ill conceived green revolution, these pests have become tolerant to all the pesticides.

GM food for Politicians' children
by Manoj Dev on Dec 21, 2010 01:28 PM

Basic question - is India really facing food shortage, specially that of vegetables? Are there authentic statistics and projections to prove shortage?
Undisputable fact is - actual effect of GM food and cotton would be known after one generation. Mr. Brinjal Pawar & Co. politicians have children and grandchildren - obviosly they do not care whether their children and grandchildren would be able to enjoy the wealth they are amassing today that they can not spend in their lifetime.

regulate supply demand
by pranav chaturvedula on Dec 21, 2010 01:27 PM  | Hide replies

I heard in Israel, agricultural production is so organized that, there is inflation around 1%. So for this to happen, we first need to know our demand and supply capabilities. and then make sure to control distribution and produce to only cater to the demand we have. And have a stock surplus of around two cycles so that we there is a famine, we can dig into those reserves and compensate it by increasing supply the next cycle. Can we do this?

One can take a horse to water but one can not make a horse drink it.

Forgot that Supreme court had to give directive Govt for distributing grains to BPL people instead of letting it rot?

Govt. can do planning, but then who will accept GM seeeds? and how monopolistic companies thrive?
