Curse
by king kong on Dec 08, 2010 09:38 PM  | Hide replies

Let a curse befall the powers that be who have no shame in collecting more than Rs 30 tax on Rs 55 worth of Petrol, and then say that PSUs are running at loss.

When they are on their deathbed, let them not have enough money to buy petrol to reach the hospital!!

Emotions aside, it's time we, the people of India stand up against these scoundrels, and freebooters.

one good way to stand up is by refusing to fuel vehicles unless the government reduces tax (till then a temporary inconvenience of public transport) When oil fills up in the tanks, refineries have no place to store processed crude, and when their cash flow gets disrupted, they will be forced to reduce price.... sadly there is not a single political party in India today who can take a lead in organizing this.

Meaning of Inflammable
by smrsraja on Dec 08, 2010 09:37 PM  | Hide replies

For long i have this doubt. In my understanding, Flammable means things which can catch fire easily. Inflammable means the opposite, right?

99% of the oil trucks i have seen in our country will have the word INFLAMMABLE in their oil tanks.

Is their understanding wrong?

Petrol, diesel prices to be hiked soon
by Hebbar R on Dec 08, 2010 09:01 PM

Why didn't the Finance Minister reduce Customs and ED on crude? That would have given some solace to the common man. No, but, the Congress, known for its anti-common man and anti-salaried class, will never do such a thing. These segments are already groaning under the burden of the prices and inflation. Now, the shameless Congress wants to punish these segments once again.

The Govt must get back the illegally stashed black money from Swiss Banks and other places. Then there will not be any need for anymore taxation.

The Central Govt are no saints. A bulk of the price is towards Customs and Excise Duty. Infact, even in the midst of the highest ever inflation, Pranab Mukerjee increased Customs and ED in his last budget. Yes, the State Govt is not right either.

Sheer ignorance
by DL Narayan on Dec 08, 2010 08:09 PM  | Hide replies

After reading some of the comments here, I am amazed by the sheer ignorance. Which is the reason why we elect corrupt people to power.

Reliance accounts for 10 % of the income of the Indian Government. It provides jobs for thousands of people directly and millions, indirectly. If India is to prosper we need many more firms like Reliance.

If cellphone calls are cheap and affordable, thank Dhiubhai Ambani for it. It was due to his vision that the common man should be able to call his family from any place in India for the cost of a post card. He said that when the cost of a post card is not based on distance, why should telephone calls. He set up an optic fibre cable network all over the country much before anyone else thought of it. He offered cheap calls and other players, including the Public Sector BSNL and VSNL were forced to bring down the charges.

This great man was a true visionary,a great patriot who created wealth for the country. He has played a huge role in the transformation of the Indian economy.

In our country, we abuse persons worthy of the highest respect and respect scoundrels who loot the country; they spout populist slogans and shed crocodile tears for the poor, while stashing away hundreds of billions in swiss banks

Allow small firms to import oil
by Indian on Dec 08, 2010 06:46 PM  | Hide replies

Allow small firms to import oil from abroad and dont make it monopoly of the biggies like Reliance etc and then see how the prices comes down and how much profit the state exchequer gets.

The state exchequer is overflowing with income from petroleum products. There is customs duty on crude oil, octroi, central and state excise and sales taxes, etc. If the price goes up internationally, you have to pay for it. I do not see how small firms can buy oil at a lower price than big firms.

In winter, the price of crude is high because of the surge in demand from Europe/US for heating purposes. In summer, the prices tend to fall.

Even if the price of crude plummets, the Govt will not reduce the price; they have a vested interest in allowing the fuel prices to remain high.

And, who do you think is going to pay the cost of subsidising fuel prices? The common man, by paying taxes. India imports oil. If international prices go up, then we have no option. But, the Govts at the state and centre can reduce taxes. They don't. Taxes account for half the cost a consumer pays.

what we pay
by rijish rajan on Dec 08, 2010 06:24 PM

every common man riding a 100cc bike, traveling by bus is paying half the fuel expense to govt as tax.

52% on MRP of petrol as tax to government who provide the worst roads for our commutation, i don't know the exact figure but a heavy tax is charged on diesel also. govt then washes the eyes of common man by claiming subsidy for diesel the common mans fuel.
