Business is the root cause

Companies like airtel & reliance offer calling cards abroad to make calls to India. These cards are at least thrice as expensive compared to thier competitors like Jumblo or Actionvoip which are part of the Germany based comapny Betamax/Dellmont Sarl. A good part of their revenues come from calls made to India. No wonder this sudden security threat has emerged.
Will they stop services like yahoo and google talk too. An encrypted email should do all wonders for the terrorists. Will the ban emails too??
Politicians and breaucrats are always up for sale, no matter who rules and where.

Stop being random
by Mohan Rajasekar on Sep 17, 2009 12:29 AM

While i am enraged myself because my parents use vonage in India for a US number, I think till the time methods to track calls are in place, this is a good move. IB is not asking to permanently ban it. They have asked to place the ban till a solution is found to trace calls and that is what will happen. With the ban, there will be more pressure on service providers to put tracing mechanisms in place. With an increasing number of threats from terrorists, Maoists etc., placing the ban sooner than later will help in the short run for sure. There will be a long term solution even if it takes a bullock cart on square wheels to deliver the solution. state your opinion about the speed with which such a solution will be sought by the government and not on the ban itself.

technology as a fix
by Raghavendra Bhat on Sep 16, 2009 02:10 PM

Instead of using technology to track and fix the issue at hand, the Govt. is using an outdated and crude tool to censor freedom @cyberspace. The Govt. would now foolishly spend more resources on censorship of VoIP lines.

type of ban
by Sanjay mehrotra on Sep 16, 2009 10:27 AM  | Hide replies

We need to understand what type of ban is this. Is it a PC to PC ban, or is it a PC to phone (in India) ban. They can never ban PC to PC voice and if PC to phone (outside India) is banned it does not help curb terrorism. The main threat to terrorism is when phone in India is called from a PC (or phone) abroad (or India). Can some body clarify what this ban is all about?

Did u mean they cant ban PC to PC voice for technical reasonn or for ethical reason. If its going through internet which offcourse is either the broadband range or telephone range, this should can intercepted right? Only thing is the service provider need to open the encryption format to IB.

India always looks to find stop-gap measures, and never any concrete measures for any problem.

After VONAGE and TIMEWARNER started giving Unlimited calls to India, People stopped buying Reliance and AIRTEL Calling Cards. Both companies came up with this plan
and lobbied with the Government. This is a lame excuse. However... since India is
India anything and everything is possible... pathetic situation.

VoIP calls originating in India can be blocked. Calling to India shouldn't get affected.

How can calling into India not be affected? They are talking about not being able to trace calls originating outside of India via VoIP but landing on a fixed line in India. If Govt decides to block this they will block any call that goes over the Internet medium -- incoming or outgoing.
