If all economists were laid end to end, they would not reach a conclusion... George Bernard Shaw :-)

Man Mohan is a over hyped economist
by MKRao on Apr 21, 2009 04:46 PM  | Hide replies

I do not why people praise Man Mohan Singh, chidu and ahluwalia to sky. These people look like Jokers to me in some respect. For example they are gung ho about SEZ. They went on to allocate lakhs of acres to Industrialists for pittance!! To start SEZ? So you may say what is wrong. First, the old adage is - "It is better to act on your strengths and waste time on working on you weaknesses". India known world over as agrarian state where 70% live on agriculture. In other words agriculture is our strength. It is our rare competence which is very difficult to get back once lost!! But these jokers are trying to make these hard working farmers beggars by selling their fertile lands to big businesses. Their logic is that the same land can generate more jobs!!! What jobs are they talking about. First try to build good infrastructure to develop competencies these SEZ require. Otherwise SEZ are not sustainable! what is the point in producing mediocre products in these SEZ which are bound to fail and so the SEZ and the money that went into it? To build this infrastructure may itself decades but is still worth it. By the mindless and crazy misadventure they only pushed these helpless farmers into poverty .That apart how many jobs have they created? May be at most in few hundred?!!! I hope they get to read this or somebody can communicate to them that the haste with which they are acting is creating only poverty in India. Please stop this madness Man Mohan what kind of economist are you?

hi Mr rao. i respect your concern on farmers and government policies on agriculture. But i think you dont have the sufficient information on SEZs and its impacts on the developing economy. Out of the 531 formal approvals of SEZs given till 2006, 174 approvals are for sector specific and multi product SEZs for manufacture of Textiles & Apparels, Leather Footwear, Automobile components, Engineering etc.. which would involve labour intensive manufacturing. SEZs are going to lead to creation of employment for large number of unemployed rural youth. Nokia and Flextronics electronics hardware SEZs in Sriperumbudur are already providing employment to 14577 and 1058 persons. Hyderabad Gems SEZ for Jewellery manufacturing in Hyderabad has already employed 2145 persons. majority of whom are from landless families, after providing training to them. They have a projected direct employment for about 2267 persons. Apache SEZ being set up in Andhra Pradesh will employ 20, 000 persons to manufacture 10,00,000 pairs of shoes every month. Current employment in Apache SEZ is 5536 persons. Brandix Apparels, a Sri Lankan FDI project would provide employment to 60,000 workers over a period of 3 years. Even in the services sector, 12.5 million sq meters space is expected in the IT/ITES SEZs which as per the NASSCOM standards translates into 12.5 lakh jobs. It is, therefore, expected that establishment of SEZs would lead to fast growth of labour intensive manufacturing and services in the country.

Do we have the competencies? is the question. By they which are our strengths? Agriculture/shoe making? So in the last few years how many jobs were created by these so called SEZs? WHAT HAPPENED TO THOUSANDS OF FARMERS WHO LANDS HAVE BEEN GRABED? Why do they need fertile lands for SEZ? Is land a renewable source? Can you live with out food? Can we vacate SEZ when they run out of competion and replace with farming? Even if we did Will there be enough farmers then? IT/IETS can exist virtually people can work from(I am IT) why do they need 100s of acres.

By the way do not talk about Hyderabad cause I am from hyderabad. The governament that we last had was just distributing land to its relatives. They gave away more than 10 lakh acres. Not more than few hundred jobs were created(aprox 500). To RAS as small unknown provice in Dubai is give 2 lakhs of acres. They have not put a penny till date.

All your figures on Hyderabad are fictitious. Forget about the jobs all those apache is a fraud till now only 150 are engaged, gems sez exists on paper only(vacant land). This is the problem we sit in ac rooms to imagining the Utopia where as our poor are suffering untold misery. Mr.MMS has defineitly will have a heart attack if he see the suffering of these farmers. That if he has heart.

Banks should reach to Rural India
by abboral boral on Apr 21, 2009 02:26 PM  | Hide replies

India is having 1 billion people and out of which 70 % people live in the rural India where developments like city and urban India has not reached properly last 60 years .Sadly our finance systems follows western cultures .Bank needs circulation of money to greater no people but instead they concentrate on developing only city and urban India where demands have quized considerably .In order to revibe our economy the following steps must be taken by the banks and authority
1. Reach emediately to Rural India by closing 50 % city based branches
2. Transfer people to rural India to serve the people (those who are willing to sacrifice their interests for a great cause )
3. logical interest should be for people (salary and non salary) --3% ,for farmers--2%,SMEs--1%,Large Industries -2%

In this way large no of pwoplw can be covered and an all round developments in IT,ruraltourism, rural roads, and infrastructures ,education ,health and lastly a new subject like RURAL SECURITY can be seen within 5 years .
