IC-814 hijack: PC defends NDA

Home Minister P Chidamabaram on Wednesday said he too might have done what the BJP-led NDA did during the IC-814 hijacking and it was not easy to predict how a decision-maker would behave in a certain situation.

“It is easy to criticise, but difficult to take decisions,” he said at a function in the capital, asked whether the government would adopt a “no negotiation policy” with terrorists.

“I can’t say. I really can’t say. How would I have behaved if families of 150 people came to me and pleaded for the lives of their loved ones,” the home minister said. The decision of the then NDA government to release terrorists in exchange of passengers of the hijacked IC-184 plane remains a point of criticism for the ruling Congress to which Chidamabaram belongs.

“If one takes ten decisions, one or two may go wrong. Show me a man who has not taken a wrong decision and I will show you a man who has taken no decision ever,” Chidambaram said.

Chidambaram said as home minister he had resolved to take decisions unmindful of what others felt or said. “I have been 50 days in the office. There is another 100 days to go for this government. I do not look over my shoulder all the time. Let my decisions be judged by the people after they are taken,” he said.

Releasing the hostages was the only option when faced with angry family members threatening violence with every passing day. 3 terrorists in exchange of 150 Indian citizens. Also remember, the plane was in Afghanistan, not in Mumbai. The two incidents are not even comparable.
Question that begs to be answered is - Government introduced sky marshals and ensured not a single plane hijack took place after the Kandahar episode.
But what has the UPA done after each bomb blast tearing Indian citizens to smithereens? Issue a statement? A condemnation? Zilch happened.

Don't trying to be a fool by saying " China changed shanghai in 5 years". Shanghai has been slowly modernized over the past 35 years.

You (meaning Congis) stopped it from being an international quality city when your namby-pamby leader Rajiv Gandhi displayed his naivety by addressing the Mayor of Bombay as the Mayor of Mumbai and thereby licked Thackeray's Bal.

WOW! so much for mumbai suddenly?
by indian on Apr 13, 2009 07:03 PM  | Hide replies

Suddenly Mumbai is going to become the "truly global city"? PM looks like in real good mood now a days?

I have request to Mr. PM and his Remote Control.
"Please don't mess with the Mumbai. Please stay as far as possible from the Mumbai. People from Mumbai can take care of themselves. We don't need you. We never got any help from you anyway. And, Mumbai is already a Global City for years you want it or not. Please don't stick photographs of you and your Remote Control on Mumbai walls and make Mumbai more ugly. Already you have done enough to do this."

I hope I am clear enough. Please stay away!!!!!

Indian:

MMS promised to convert Mumbai to Shanghi within 4-5 years .... that was 4-5 years back..

Then Soniya's speech writers gave him an idea....

They tweaked the text so that instead of a very specific target Shanghai, it became "global city"...

Now all MMS needs to do is to point out to non-believers that Mumbai indeed exists on the globe.... at least till now... (god knows with a few more Kasabs what the future has in store, but that's a different story..)..

So, since Mumbai is still on the globe, it is a global city..... yey... :)

they made efforts; blame it on the terrorists; they made mumbai global before them. as far as making mumbai shanghai is concerned; they asked their minister for railways making it a patna first.

why are indians never happy and satisfied
by paloalto on Apr 13, 2009 06:57 PM  | Hide replies

are we cursed forever to live unsatisfied and unhappy lives? unfortunately, the ones happy are never satisfied ( politicians, film stars and industrialists ); why can't i see a smile on a single mumbaikars face while he travels to work, by the time he travels back from work; he'd have died a million times; who has an answer to this problem; yoga, our political system or soaring ambitions, who fanned it in the first place??

Taking your question a lil further;
What is it that we need to be happy? Is it the right definition of being happy itself that is missing or unknown to most of us? Or, is it that we are ignorant to where we are heading as a civilization till the time it comes down on our heads as a catastrophe.

by jambu jambu on Apr 13, 2009 06:56 PM  | Hide replies

I only want PM and other dignataries to visit Powai - supposed to be posh place - let them travel from Vikroli to POwai IIT - neat the bridge - just after the telephone exchange on the way to IIT. The pavement is used as public toilet and no one can walk during day time - anytime - The children in the jobbarpatti use this as public toilet and it is a night mare for bus/ taxi/ car travellers not to speak of the pedestrians - is this Mumbai , we want to project as Shankai ? -

ICAI IS 100% RESPONSIBLE FOR PARALLEL ECONOMY IN INDIA
by udayraj on Apr 13, 2009 06:50 PM  | Hide replies

Indian Business School is ranked 15th in International educational institutions; that is the proud moment for India and that is the topmost achievement for any Indian educational institution. Also, it is surprising that Indian Business School overtakes IIMs, IITs like great educational institutions and paltry educational bodies, whose quality structures are in dolldrum, like ICAI, ICSI, ICWAI, etc. It is better for INDIAN GOVERNMENT that they should handover the responsibilities of ICAI, ICSI, ICWAI to Indian Business School & link Indian Business School to apex bodies and dissolve ICAI, ICSI, & ICWAI, so that no malpractices will happen in forthcoming bright future of corporate culture. Also, it is also desirable that all charters given to these three i.e. ICAI, ICSI, ICWAI, organisation members should have to be withdrawn permanently. At the moment of charters given to members of these third class educational institutions being taken back all black money will came into the system as white money & no special efforts will be required to overcome economic crisis. Government must have to pay attention to this important issue. ICAI is the institution which is 100% responsible for the parallel economy running in this country. If Ministry of Company Affairs is unwilling to this, then it is the presumption that ministry also part of the fraudulent system & their intentions were not to curb the malpractices but to proliferate the same.

You have got a point. Though i do not agree that all failures should be dismantled but i certainly feel that they should be made accountable. If one institution can fetch laurels, if one state can become hub for industries, progress, infrstructure and agriculture, then why other institutions and states can not. And if by some devious practices they are still backward and in effect forcing all of us to be backward, then they should be overhauled. Whoever is in charge, has to be made accountable to results.
