This article is misleading

If you buy an AMD based system instead of Intel the prices are less for same config. by abt 2-3k.
Plus there is no need to BUY a costly, resource intensive, unstable OS or office suite or x-y-zee.exe when Linux is free, secure, stable and now has a very good desktop with KDE and its support is available locally through communities or through the net, again free, both in cost and freedom. So it makes sense to buy a better and low cost system than get locked for years, especially when hardware technology is improving faster and everything is web enabled, what is the use of installing and upgrading legacy system.

Indian Pirates
by Mayuresh Mumbarkar on Jan 24, 2008 10:46 AM

Indians will never pay for any software even if Microsoft reduce price (if its available for free). By using pirated softwares one dose not compromise on quality. I am not supporting piracy, but unfortunately thats the way it is.

cheaper software = less piracy
by bdc dca on Jan 24, 2008 10:46 AM

its true in countries like India, China & F E the cost of software has to come down in order to stop Piracy.
IF the price of a desktop or laptop that runs a legal Microsoft OS (XP or Vista) and Office suite increases by 20 to 35 per cent, obviously a student will opt for pirated software , just the same as in the Music industry.
The Govt is also to blame ,at least in india, they extract their price by charging exhorbitant excise and other duties which forces the prices to increase, thats why the costs also increase, if the Manufacturers are willing to drop their prices in entry markets , then the Govt should also do like wise and reduce the excises and import duties , only then will the prices drop and users will opt for Original software rather than pirated stuff

Cheap computers

It is interesting to read 90% of the operating systems are pirated. It shows that these softwares are priced too high and relatively more expensive than the computer. When the chain is more expensive than the elephant, nautrally, people will look for cheaper chains. So the software manufactures has to cut the price to induce people to go for riginal programmes.

countries like India , China should promote Linux based Pcs , Applications etc to counter the monopoly of microsoft. once 50% of the users are using linux other applications working on them automatically the microsoft dadagiri will come down.

Dear Kumar..being an uneducated..please forgive my ignorance...I was mentioning an idiom. However I didn't know that elephants are tethered with their heart..in our land they use a chain and when that chain is more expensive than the elephant itself people will look for cheap chains.I am trying to clarify my point.

We all agree to this. If microsoft reduces the price of its OS and make it affordable, it will make more money... Even if it charges 500 Rs, i am sure that 50% people will convert to original windows bringing more money for MS

Point very well taken Mr. Tom Dick. I would also like to mention here that Linux versions such as Fedora and others (which are free) are far better, secure and faster than Windows versions (like Vista).
