Linux is better but the configuration takes time as all pieces needed are not available in one place. Software companies in India should form a dedicated core group to maintain, enhance and promote installable versions of Linux for most commonly used platforms. They have the resources as well as manpower to do this.A part of every IT companies profits should be directed towards sustaining this core team.
Also this will give a stable and decent alternative to commercial OS as well as reduce the countries dependency on Microsoft Windows.
I think all govt. offices as well as personal PC/Laptop users have a right to get good quality OS free of cost , especially if its done in India.

Apparently, you haven't enlightened them as yet. Try demonstrating to them how they can get their work done quicker and more efficiently on Linux. Most people use Windows because they know of nothing else!
my linux (redhat and debian) servers running without a reboot for the last 2 years and one or two reboots for the last 6 years or so...So all are who support Microsoft must stop talking against Linux OS. We know better than you fools...

moreover there are chances that these people going to affect Cancer deceases due to low quality...I advise dont buy such cheap products...
With the advent of online office suites like Zoho and Google Docs, the OS and office suite are becoming obsolete. Most of the software is now available over the web & SaaS is the future.
Computers like Zonbu, dekTOP etc will become more popular & laptop prices will get slashed further.
Dont buy above suggestion...if possible avoid yourself from reading above. A first time buyer may need really good analisys. Do that with an experienced user and also depending on your requirement.
Companies like microsoft, intel and wal-mart are exploiters and sharks.they need to be tamed.Government of india musttalk to microsoft to sell windows XP,Vista and MS office at rs 1500,rs 3000 and rs 2000 respectively per user licence respectively or else India Government in public interest should withdraw copyright rigths of Microsoft in Indian Union territory. It is permitted in WTO agreements. You can't allow these companies to loot the poor nations and poor citizens of countries like India.I am surprised what happened to our brilliant software experts of India going to be super power soon( not my opinion). Can't they produdce a local OS system as good as windows and compatible with most of applications run with it?

There is an operating system that is as good as windows called linux. It's free. As far as normal users are concerned, everything you need is on it. Open Office, MPlayer, Amarok, etc. You have almost everything you need.
"Can't they produdce a local OS system as good as windows and compatible with most of applications run with it" Simple answer - NO. Microsoft OS is proprietary and lots of its mechanisms are unknown to anyone who is not an employee. The software industry can build an operating system, but it will not be windows - only MS has the knowhow to build that.
Finally, stop being a socialist. If you cannot afford windows, use linux. It's not an essential service like a drug for Aids or cancer. The WTO provisions allow for copyright withdrawal for such things, not an operating system, for which we have dozens of options. If you cannot afford it, don't buy it, plain and simple.

Actually, you cannot duplicate windows because it is proprietary - nobody except MS programmers know the internals of windows. Now, if you cannot afford windows, dont use windows. Use linux. It has most of the stuff you will need, and you pay nothing. Why should the government get involved in something like an operating system which is non-essential? That WTO clause is for medicines for life-threatening illnesses and the like. Cannot be used for any random think like an OS. Pay what MS asks for, or take your business elsewhere. Simple economics.
You say Linux distros like RedHat, Suse etc charge for support - well, so does microsoft - so effectively you end up paying twice. Plus, how often have you called the main software vendor for support? As far as office is concerned, Linux comes with Open Office - it may not be as fully featured as MS Office, but for most basic to intermediate level stuff, it works perfectly fine. DOS, of course is junk... but I expect most people in India to buy this comp and then install a pirated XP version.
Linux has a lot of bad press due to perceived difficulty to use, but in fact, off late, it's very easy to use. Plus you get almost every piece of software you will need free, which is attractive if you dont want to pay heavy license fees for proprietary software which are not going to be heavily used, or have all features used. If you are willing to spend a few hours getting used to a slightly different interface, linux will work fine for you even on a desktop or laptop (though I've heard that power management for linux is not that great)
RE:Microsoft charges for support too!
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Jan 24, 2008 10:58 AM
Oh, and forgot... Good ol MS Vista uses up 1Gb memory even when there's nothing running. A cheap laptop will have no more than 1Gb memory - with vista on the system, it will suck bigtime (MS has stopped distributing WIndows XP with new laptops, apparently). So, I dont see how a cheap laptop can sell with Windows Vista
Misleading article. I am user of Linux. I have tried various versions like knoppix, PC Linux, Fedora etc. They are much user friendly even sometimes better than Windows. They come bundled with OpenOffice which has better features than MS Windows. You get support from the net for each and every doubt. If you are buying a laptop /PC preloaded with Linux they give support
