Lets start with the basics
by Kshitij Bhotika on Apr 15, 2008 04:15 PM  | Hide replies

Its goodto know that many of us want a change. But lets start with the basics.
How many of us even go to vote in the general elections. The educated class considers it a waste of time. We just exclaim saying- 'Whats the diff?!!', 'It's a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea (NDA or UPA or even worse -Left).
What we need to do is:
Get the youth moving. Lets get out to vote. There are quite a few poltical groups started by educated people who actually want ot bring in a change. Let's encourage them. Lets vote for them.We have to get out to make a difference.

Let the political groups know the power and ambition of the youth. Scare the hell out of them with our intensity. Tell them to either change or get voted out.Its in our hands to restore faith in democaracy.

An alterative when no candidate is found to be suitable for support during an election is to caste your vote for "none of the above". There is such a provision on the ballot. At the very least this ensures that your vote will not be utlizied by someone else fraudulently. If more than 50% of the electorate in a constituency castes a vote for "none of the above" then that election is automatically cancelled.

As long as there is hunger, poverty and illiteracy, there is no way you can do away with corruption. You cant ask a hungry fellow not to steal. It is going to be an upward climb if we wish to free ourselves of those evils.

If anybody can show me one honest person standing for the elections, I will vote for him.Unfortunately, politics is a profession people chose to make money. There is no service to the people intended. That is the tragedy of our beautiful country.

Here is ONE "JAYAPRAKASH NARAYAN" of "Lok Satta"

Founder Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan, is a former IAS officer of the 1980 batch, renowned for his integrity as well as efficiency and a people's activist from Andhra Pradesh, India. He quit his job late in 1996 following a highly impressive track record. What is special about Jayaprakash is that he left his IAS job not because he was disenchanted or disillusioned. On the other hand, he had a highly distinguished as well as eventful 16-year-long career in the government. Highly respected in the state for his result-oriented administration, Jayaprakash, an optimistic individual, talks about the efficacy of reforms in the governance among several other issues. He firmly believes that democracy is for the people, of the people and by the people. He states that his group or party is aimed to enrich the political scenario in India with its true spirit, thereby aiming to create a true and faithful political picture in India. He purportedly said "Every individual has certain strengths and capabilities. My aim is to create such an environment that every one of us can use their capabilities completely and get a perfect outcome for their productivity."[citation needed] He is famously known as a person with certainty in thoughts and reality in work. His speeches and articles invarious news papers are thought provoking.

Currect practices before the elections.
1. Increase of salaries of Govt employees by 40%. This is a big vote catching device. Could they not first control the prices first and then increase the salaries. The nonsalaries people are in majority who bear the brunt of the resultant infletion. Most of the staff will jump out from 10% to 20% slab and similarly 20 and 30% slabs which means the Govt gets back, the resulting increase being30% only.
2.The anouncement of C.T.V's for the voters is a blatant move of corruption or acknowledging that they will recoupe this money after elctions. Can the E.C STOP THIS PRACTICE. The movement of moneys before ELECTIONS can be gauged by the RBI/GOVT AND INSTEAD OF KEEPING QUIET. iT IS THIS TIME SOME OF THE UNACCOUNTED MONEY IN FOREIGN TAX HAVENS WILL COME OUT IN TO THE MARKET TO CAUSE UNHEALTHY SWINGS.

if you dont know abt something then listen to somebody who knows. Monaco, St.Kitts, mauritius - there are so many ways to stash money and hide your trails. People specialize in doing this. And for all these known things there are umpteen underground offshoots. People turn film producers and spend crores - why? for charity? Understand the world and react.

John,

The discussion is not about banking system but crores of black money kept in secret acounts. A bank may have changed the name, dealings may have improved but the money does not perish ??

Investments come from present day earners. The discussion is about stolen money hidden outside India.

basic instinct!
by shiva on Apr 15, 2008 03:00 PM

To keep money stashed away for a rainy day is a basic instinct. But to do it illegally is against basic conscience!

Few decades ago, the total tax rate was over 100%. So the rich did their best to protect their wealth by any means! Now the tax rates are reasonable and people who resort to this, should be punished.Hoarding in gold is also non-productive. Even middle class do it to give them some comfort.

It is ironical that the rich from poor countries hide their wealth in Swiss accounts! Some die and the funds lie forever, as they are hidden from even their own kith & kin.

The logical way should be to give avenues for investment in the respective countries. Frankly, when the returns are good in India, most money might have found its way back. US dollar is weak and even the Swiss Banks are going hat in hand! Even the most venerable UBS was doddering and had to repeatedly deny it was going bankrupt!

It would be impossible to bring all the money back. No use in indulging in another fury of fingers in the net. The Govt should devise carrot & stick policy to lure the funds. If they can work with others to tighten the loopholes by disallowing benami accounts, that would be a real step forward. There should also be a way to declare to some authority the details of big amounts held to trace them back.

Private bankers are in big demand and brings huge income to the banks. So wheels within wheels and many interests involved. Not easy to crack!

Corruption as an election agenda
by Farooq on Apr 15, 2008 02:47 PM

Simultaneously, we the people of this country must ensure that corruption becomes the central issue in the following general elections. It is unfortunate that at a subconscious level, we seem to have given up our fight against corruption. Perhaps its gargantuan size seems to have overwhelmed us psychologically. Apart from the need for the legislation as mentioned above we also need to ensure:

The Election Commission should alter the format of election affidavits candidates to include declaration for the wealth accumulated abroad.
We need to ban PNs and ensure that only those who reveal their identity get back their money through the PNs. Else these must be expropriated by the government.
Ensure that we cooperate with all multilateral agencies on this subject to ensure that wherever there is a global movement against opaque banking and tax havens we must be active participants.
But that is not all. Huge sums of public money have been stashed abroad by Indians in various tax havens. Our democracy and democratic traditions with all their pitfalls as explained above are incompetent to deal with the extant issue. And if we have to recover our money, it can be done through a direct action of the aam aadmi -- you and me. Are you ready?

YES WE ARE READY - NO VOTE ANYBODY IF THEY DONT HAVE THIS POINTS AGREED IN THIER CAMPAIGN

Point Noted And Agreed. Let's get back to business and that's what the author must also be doing.I'm leaving the whole matter to God,because we are sinners in some way or other and cannot point fingers at others.God will take of people who stole my hard earned money - it's my curse and if they don't see it during their lifetime, they will see it in their childeren and if they dont see it there, then Life After. In the meantime my sincere request to mankind and especially parents to bring up their children well so that the generations getting sucked into this vicious circle stops.

dont generalize. there are categories of sin. The one mentioned here is one of the worst categories. I havent done that and I have every right to throw stones at people who have done that. Yes, I agree we cant do much against powerful people. But what we can do is to spread the awareness, try to influence friends & family. Also contribute to the downfall of mighty in whatever way you can - if you have proof of any wrongdoing leak it thru media OR send it to police etc. obviously taking care of ur safety. But dont sit idle and jus tpray to god. Only if we do 50% god will put in its 50%
