and here's the fix
by parijat singh on Mar 15, 2007 11:25 PM

I believe that the only way that India can be brought on track is through conscientious quasi-dictatorship. We need a leader like the late Subhash Chandra Bose to lead the nation. The bottom-up approach of rooting out the corrupt is not going to work, because officials at the bottom, middle and top levels are all protected by the ruling politicians. Even when a corrupt politician loses power in a state, the new incumbent throws out the corrput staff but brings in his own corrupt set of bureaucrats.

What we need is a young, dynamic leader to head the nation. Someone with whom the youth can identify and the old can relate. These old politicians only care about staying in power and filling their coffers with black money to fight the next elections. If we have a person who has near-complete control on things, who is not compromised by coalition politics, he can root out the corrupt and make the system efficient. The country should be rid of all poiticians except the ones at the centre. Managers should be assigned for each state and run the system like a corporation. Of course, there will still be corruption in this scenario, but it will be minimal and limited, and won't hamper growth and most of all, the end user, the citizen, will not be compromised.

There will of course be some loss of rights, but in all it sounds like a fair bargain compared to the state of the nation today. What use if free speech if you can't stand up to illiterate criminals who comprise the majority of our politicians? Look at China, they have managed to develop a larger and more populous country solely on the basis that the Govermment is virtually dictatorial. I am not suggesting a tyrant regime, but just the right mix of things. The most important thing is that there should be one good person, or a committee, like Rome's triumvirate, in command, so that project execution is expedited and no extra time is wasted in democratically debating the pros and cons of each thing for eternity. Look what democracy has given us till now.

system change...

after reading the message from brother Akash, i again came to the same conclusion what i have been saying for long. we need a change in system. this system is being made by politicians. they make rules and laws. do you think they will make any rule which can nab them in future? we need a very strong system like we have in saudi arabia where no body is spared. be guilty then be punished. rapist must die by stoning, killer must die by chopping off his head and that too before the public. thats what makes the country a peaceful and free from any crime.

Yup, in saudi arabia, they just chop the hands, feet, or testacles of the criminal, or stone them to death (popular punishment for women wrong-doers - even if they are the ones that had been raped and dared to complain to the authorities). The mullahs have probably got it right: you cannot and should not treat the humans as humans, but rather as animals. No wonder there is NOooo crime in the Arab world! And this probably explains why the mullahs commit all the atrocities elsewhere.

Corruption Corruption aayo humme khaayo!!!!!
by Akash on Mar 15, 2007 10:56 PM  | Hide replies

There is corruption everywhere!!! I had not encountered most of it as I had not visited Govt. Offices as my parents did most of the job,I can give you two examples, my mom told me to go to BSNL office to get my internet hours renewed when broadband had not arrived. I usually used to go to a private shop owner who had all the cards, well he was too far off and the main BSNL govenment building was nearby,I went asked the guard outside where I could find the office where I could have my BSNL card renewed, he told me go to the second floor,I went to the second floor, there was a babu chewing pan over there with his feet on the table,I said I have come to have my internet renewed,he said y have u come here???in a very rude manner and then said go to the third floor, I went to the third floor, there was a senior officer sitting over there,I said I have come to have my internet renewed,he shouted at me leave your shoes outside!!! so I went out to take my shoes off, when I came back I said I have to have my internet renewed,he said y have u come here??? I said that person on the second floor told me to come here,he said do you have some specific id??? I said no,he said u want it renewed!!! I said yes, he said go to the second floor,I said I just came from there,he did not respond and started talking to another person about problems in his house!! I came to the second floor again, the babu was still sitting there with 2 friends,I said I went up there but they told me I have to come to you to have my internet renewed,he said he told u that???? then he cracked some joke with a friend of his and told me actually did u see the office near the gate, internet gets renewed over there, so I came down to the same place where the guard stood,I asked is this the place where one gets a internet renewal card??? he said yes!!! I went to the office, there was a lock outside!!!! and I saw an old lady fighting with the guard out there that she was coming to the office for the past 2 weeks to have her phone connection restored!!! I went to the private shop owner then. This is incidence 1.

Now for incidence 2.
I had to have my passport made so I went to the passport officer at D.M.'s office, he told me office is closed it opens between 10 and 2 in the morning,i came the next day,he said all papers in order??? I said here are the papers,he checked it and said is this your bank account details??? I said yes,he said go put some money in your account so that I know it's still running!!! so I went back again, I had it done, came back to the office the next day 10.30 sharp, he told me please I am a busy person and started telling someone how he was humiliated at a railway station by female police officers and how bad it is that women go for jobs,I said are my papers in order??? he said can't you see I am busy??? we work from morning till 11 in the night, u guys are always in a hurry, so I stood there, he then turned and said yes papers are in order, and then became quite polite and said listen your work will be done u got to give 200 rupees!!!! I said 200???? he said I have to tell others that u need a passport afterall the system works like that u understand, I said ok knowing that he was trying to imply he wont give me the receipt and throw away my passport form if I did not give him an additional 200 bucks!!!! I had already spent the original amount for the form needed by Govt. of India and this guy was a govt. in himself,he told me to specifically come the next day with 200 bucks or else I wont get my receipt and when I went with 200 bucks he did it what we see on tv corrupt guys doing, asking for money under the table literally!!!then the police came for verfication, one of them seemed half drunk,he looked at the picture in the form, then at me, he said yup the same person, there was another police officer with him, both of them came inside, and though they did not mention any money, one of them said,we need an affidavit in 2 hours that u belong to this house that u r this person, I said but I have already put all the relevant papers with the form??? he said but the form has to go today,I need it today or else your form wouldn't reach, and then they kept staring at me with eagerness,I said can I do it till saturday??? they said ok, I said the form will stay back till then?? they said yes. Now I had the affidavit made that I lived in the same house that I live in and that I am the same person that I am, then I forgot the name of the officer who came, I went and asked another officer,he said thodi suvidha shulk lagti hain?? I said but I don't have any money at the moment,he said ab dekho bhai, agar nahi de sakte to koi problem nahin tumhare upar false case lagaa sakte hain woh officers, passport apne aap stall ho jayega, gosh!!!! so they asked for suvidha shulk of 300 bucks!!! or else they were going to fabricate a false case against me as they threatened me to do so. Now within a week I got a call from the local intelligence officer,he was rather polite and said beta tumhara form aa gaya hain?? I said so u have to come for verification?,he said no u have to come. wierd. I always thought they came to verify but who knows,so I went to their office,he was standing outside,he said chai piyoge? I said nahin uncle and wanted to free myself from this blood thristy scoundrels once and for all. He verified, saw my photographs, saw my details and papers,I signed the papers and then he said those golden words, kitna laayein hon? I said kya? He said arre passport ban raha hain kitna laayein hon? I said 200,he said itna to humare bacchhe har din udaate hain, meri salary isse zyada hain, I said ab aap batao uncle kitna lagega, he said 500. I said mere paas to itne hee hain,he said dekho bhai humara kuuch nahin jaata tum jaise log har din iss office ke chakkar katate hain,ab aaraam se de do,kaam nahi latkega aur kaam rukega bhi nahin. now I had only 300 left at home my parents were out of town and he was going to dump all this effort of mine running to get my passport made, he then said baaki 300 lekar aana tab kaam hoga,300,bhaag to nahin jayoge??? I said ab uncle aapse kya bhaagna,I came back with the 300 he said chai piyoge??? I said no. I said ab to koi verification koi bhaagna nahin, wahin se hoga? he said yes, I said kitna time lega? he said 6 months, I said 6 months!!! form mein tha maximum 3 months minimum 1, he said ab aise hee kaam hota hain, khush hon ki tumhara jaldi ho raha hain jo manaa kerte hain unka isse bhi zyada leta hain!!
in fact if you see the cost I bared paying this private govt. within the govt. it was equal to the actual cost of the passport to be made by the govt. of india - 1000 bucks. 1000 to the real govt. 1000 to this private govt. within the system. small incidents not to the magnitude of the scale of corruption in this country but still shows a picture how it operates and you can't run from them,u go to them u step out with your pockets empty!!!! If India shines officers like these make it whine!!!

I always think the biggest trouble-makers in the world are the muslims, and they seem to commit all the crimes in non-islamic societies. Surprisingly, most muslims, especially women, do not want to live in Saudi Arabia or other muslim nations, but would rather live in the west and while enjoying the perks of freedom , preach and praise about the islamic societies. Hmmm, such an attitude would make any other person a hypocrite, but a muslim - well, thats muslim rationality at its best.

You are right about tougher actions against criminals, the way Arab countries implement. I do believe the next time a muslim commits offense in a non-islamic society, treat him as Saudi Arabia would - hang him HIGH after dripping him dry of blood, and don't worry when the muslim community protests and criticizes the sentence!

I gave it a humorous light, but I was really angry, frustrated and upset!!!! when this happened,in fact I haven't gone through the real trouble compared to others,my dad told me don't pay a bribe, you make them stronger by doing so, he was being idealist, but during the passport incident when the police had come for verification my mom was there and she had seen these buggers were capable of tearing up my passport form if I didn't give them money,An inherent right of a citizen is snatched away,u give money then take it!!!stronger??? they are already strong!!!! u don't give them they don't do your job in fact they threaten you that they will fabricate a false case against you so that your passport gets stalled if you don't pay money!!!! and in the D.M. office I saw several other people mostly young students running away from the country, there wasn't a single middle aged person or older person, all were in their early 20's being abused, being told what idiots they were, one person a fairly decent and polite guy, I saw his marksheet a topper being told that he was an idiot if he does not know what time to come and since he was wearing specs the passport officer told him u do it for fashion? he said no I have eye strain that's y and he said you photographs on the form shouldnt have you wearing specs and hurled abuses at him and tore out the photographs!!! it was then that I understood what these buggers are capable of!!!! He told him u want to run the the U.S. and show your fashion, show it in your house, form should have a photograph without u wearing specs otherwise don't come here, then he started talking to someone else who had already bribed him in a very polite manner and this guy said sir can u give me some time? he said I am not sitting here to give people time!!!!!!

Fantastic Article
by Vijay on Mar 15, 2007 10:52 PM

This is perhaps the only article worth reading on rediff. Congrats to the authors. However, I felt sad after reading it because, we all know who are the criminals, but yet they rule us. or I would rather say, we let them rule us. Centuries ago, we had, say hundreds of Maharajas, but now with these criminals, we have thousands (IAS, IPS, officers, politicians, smaller gov officials, public work contractors) of maharajas ruling us.

Even God cant help India. Because we have Politicians in the first place & then IAS, IPS etc the 3 Star people & above all we also have TOWN PLANNERS. THAT MAKES CHAOS COMPLETE. ALL THESE SO CALLED INTELLIGENT FOOLS, GET KICKED FROM ONE POST TO ANOTHER POST BY POLITICIANS, EVEN BEFORE THEY UNLOAD THEIR BELONGINGS FROM THE TRUCK. THEY ARE CALLED ALLROUNDERS & CAN HANDLE ANY POST. JUST SOME FOOL CALLS BANGALORE SILICON CITY, DOES IT BECOME SAN JOSE OR SAN FRANSISCO? IF SO, WHY NOT CALL INDIA USA OR GERMANY SO THAT INDIA ITSELF WILL BECOME ADVANCED OVERNIGHT IRRESPECTIVE OF SUCH DIRECTOR GENERALS OF FOOLS? WITH SUCH MINDSET, INDIA CAN NOT DEVELOP EVEN AFTER 1,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 YRS. (SORRY NO PLACE TO ADD MORE ZEROES) ONLY WAY INDIA CAN DEVELOP IS BY HAVING MLAs & MPs WORKING IN THEIR CONSTITUENCIES FOR 25 DAYS IN A MONTH, THEIR CHILDREN NOT PERMITTED TO STUDY UPTO GRADUATION (IF THEY STUDY AT ALL & PASS 10TH) OUT OF THE CONSTITUENCY, THEIR FAMILIES NOT GIVEN MEDICAL TREATMENT OUT OF THEIR CONSTITUENCY, MLAs & MPs NOT PERMITTED TO TRAVEL BY ANYTHING BUT PUBLIC TRANSPORT, NO RIBBON CUTTINGS BY ANY POLITICIANS EXCEPT BY LOCALLY AVAILABLE TEACHERS, NO GOVT VEHICLES, DRIVERS, SERVANTS AT HOME FOR GOVT OFFICIALS, DEATH SENTENCE TO MLAs, MPs, IAS, IPS ETC. FOR ANY CRIME AND THE LIKE. INDIA WILL DEVELOP OR GO BEYOND USA & JAPAN IN 10 YRS.

And that's the trouble with India
by Paula Joseph on Mar 15, 2007 10:37 PM  | Hide replies

A good article. The problem with many so-called politicians and literates have crippled understanding of what is development. Most of them think that investments and BSE index can alone boost our GDP, including our PM & FM. But we less focus upon infrastructure and resources management. Frankly speaking, we are worst at management of resources. Previous NDA govt did invested good amount of money in building infrastructure with deadlines, similar to industrial management system. Present UPA is always struggling to keep BSE index as high as possible (artificially) & neglecting rest of sectors. Mismanagement of economy is apparent with present government as top economists of India pointed out. Since there is no much difference in terms of economic policies between NDA and UPA.
We need organized and active planning to build infrastructure, keeping in view of merits and demerits (learn from developed & developing countries).

Middle and lower income (class - has nothing to do with poverty) wimps like us should wake up to reality. You need a sound nation - demand this.

1) No politician .....d should win an election and then come to us with a thank you note. Address us - curse us if we are doing wrong, but speak the truth every week on TV on what the problems are and how you will address them. Dont mince honey - just put it to us and for once we will eat it in the interests of the country.

2) Make Andaman and Nicobar the prison islands once more - but this time for our nation's corrupt. Start off with the most popular tax cheaters in the country and do a Saudi Arabia on them - and telecast it. Now you are talking of a nation on the mend.

by Mambakkam Subramanian on Mar 15, 2007 10:00 PM  | Hide replies

Yes, the problems are there and they are not easy to surmount. But infrastructure development will not be a reality unless the thinking of the Political class is completely changed. Even today the official view is that Profit is a dirty word and every one believes that if some one is making money he is a cheat and a fraud.

India is largely composed of three types, one the empty vain and boastful crowd which keeps on repeating the slogan " Mera Bharath Mahan" the other is the cynical no hopers who only see the negatives and the fall in standards.

You will be surprised to see some of the youngsters of less than 30 years in age talk about how things would have been better if the British had continued in India beyond 1947, though the only Britisher they might have seen would be the English Cricketers that too on the TV.
Yes the situation is definitely proving that the No hopers are right and the present standards in Public Life being what they are and with the Coalition Politics ruling that it is not the economic policies that matter but strictly the electoral convenience that will ensure the continuation of the Government in Power.
You see one set of poiliticians who have been teaming up with BJP in one five year dispensation making a volte face and call them coimmunal today because the present demands that they stand up for the coalition of Secular (!) parties to saty in Power and retain some 8 or ten paying ministries where the single Party is minting money with its members as ministers.

This situation is not going to change and if anything it is going to worsen.
So God help India.

If India shines officers like these make it whine!!!

i agree with you. we measure progress with GDP and the sensex rise but actually this doesnt bring prosperity unless we make sure that every common man in india is sleeping with filled stomach and no farmer is forced to commit suicide.

Your comment reflects the actual state of our "great country"- soon it will be like Indonesia. Poor will be too poor. The rich like Ambanis will become a nation in the nation.
