We should pay it
by Divya Punj on Jul 10, 2006 07:34 PM

Hi
there are a few things
to buy every liter of petrol we pay rupees and govt pays dollars. Indian Rupee is nothing but paper in the gulf.

so if you want cheap petrol then start paying in dollars.

next :--- people do not pay taxes so govt uses the petrol route to extract it.

i am sure after sometime it will all be consumption based tax. thats the best then no one will be able to escape from it.

Petrol costing
by Gopinath P G on Jul 10, 2006 07:15 PM

Crude was costing only US$ 28 per barrel almoist steady. Then the OPEC started hiking up the price.(1)First of all why no group of countries are objecting.(2)Why the world is not putting a ban on the use of fuel for motorcar racing .As the article states why a poor country like India should embark on the costly motor car racing.(3) Why we are not going for alternate fuel like adding alcohol from Begasse(4) Why should the sales tax and central tax on petrol and diesel etc be increased as a percentage so that public has to bear the brunt and the central and state Govts enjoy the higher quantum. It should be fixed and sealed at the rateat wh9ich it was when the cruide cost was at US$ 28 and increase only at the rate of its 10% every year.(5)Why cant we stop supplying cooking gas in cylinders and supply it from bulk tanks or tanks on the 40 ft trailers through pipelines.(why we cannot try alternate fuels for cooking like orange peel fuel in places like Nagpur(6) What is the cost reduction achieved in the refineries etc.(6) why not scrap the petroleum conservation dept and form an ALTERNATE FUEL RESEARCH CELL as the conservation achieved is only on paper not real.

by Nitin Anand on Jul 10, 2006 06:59 PM

I on the behalf of the middle class would like to say that we pay everywhere more, We pay directly or indirectly half of earnings as taxes etc.

Is there anything where we can have a relief...?

Why do we have to pay so much for petrol?
by Bhaskar Ghosh on Jul 10, 2006 06:52 PM

Re: the story by veeresh@chowk.com
Excellent perspective. Oil cos incurr high non-productive and wasteful expenditure. Their executives and employees exercise no austerity.

They have been spending endlessly on advertising, in a category where the consumer doesn't see a difference between petrol sold by one oil co. vs another. Why?

We pay a lot but get what - I have a few Questions!!!
by Mahesh on Jul 10, 2006 06:46 PM

I Appreciate Veeresh for understanding the concerns of the denizens. Earlier people only in the middle class used to taste the soarer petrol. But now it is now bitter even for the higher class to taste the
fuels.
I have a few questions which are meant and have to be answered by the concerned organizations and governments
Q1. When the fuel prices are shooting to the galaxy like space shuttles every now and then, why can\'t the state and central governments remove the taxes in favour of the people if they are for them.
Q2. Why do these oil companies compete with each other in advertising and why can\'t they stop their useless sponsorships and save something for the citizens.
Q3. Why every body from fuel outlets to the government want to make only business from us and why don\'t they have humanity.
Q4. Why are these government reforms created only the salaried section.
Q5. Why are people running to other countries for earning more MONEY.

IF ANY BODY CAN ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS I WILL BE THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE

why we pay so much for petrol?

Hi,
I always wonder what happens to our own crude production? What percentage is it of the total?
The domestic production ought to be cheap and not subject to any import duties, blah blah.
I always read that the international price of oil is this and that and so we got to pay so much....As Indians, what advantage do we get out of what crude we have in the country?
Also, why compare our prices with international retail prices when our production costs are much lower even if have to import the crude at international prices? Our plants cost less to build and operate so where is the advantage that we should be getting?
So all this talk of the refineries bleeding etc. is a lot of crap. The government earns tons of money from sale of petroleum at artificially high rates. Dont expect it to want people to really save on petrol, diesel etc.
Notice how the wait and slow progress at Octroi and several other check posts helps us all to consume more and the government to collect more. Bad roads mean more consumption and more money in the government's hands.
If we really start using less, the government's budget would go phut...

Hi,
The calculation that u showed considers $70/bbl which is the crude commodities price. However the oil companies generally enter long term contracts they are typically in the range of $40-$45/bbl. Which makes petrol even cheaper!

Cheers
