Speech exquisite but not his company practices
by Venkatesh on Feb 15, 2006 08:17 PM

I have to agree that the speech sounds great and he is a visionary. NMR alludes to ethical and legal responsibilty of the organization and the employees. But is this being practiced by Infosys at its various operations across US? Looking at the current state, Infosys is nothing but a big body shopper with stingy business measures centered around profitability. So is his foot where his mouth is?

There are no business guidelines on how the employees shipped to US from India are treated. There is no HR, the managers are business focused and not people focused to name a few issues. The employees act as HR for new employees, they act as concierge, act as mentors and pretty much everything else. So where is the Infosys conscience, the ethics he refers to time and again.

I am not an Infosys employee and so I really dont care. I used to have high regard for Infosys and NMR. But from what I have seen here, Infosys is a great bodyshopper with no moral ground. In this age where we talk about Corporate Social responsibility and ethics, I guess we need to start with our own employees. So may be NMR needs to start cleaning up his house first before he can give any more "wow" speeches.

by Chakrapani Gopal on Feb 15, 2006 07:12 PM

Narayana Murthy is a man who cares for India and make it a greatest economy in the world bringing in security to the country through IT Building. India is a rich country and no one is poor on knowledge however the bureaucracy has made things worse. India needs Narayana Murthy like professionals who care in building the todays knowledge. Though I dont work for Infosys I love to one day but not for any other mncs.

Could have been more exciting
by Subho on Feb 15, 2006 06:27 PM

My American classmates from UMD trooped down with me to GW all eager to hear NRN speak. A proud former Infoscion, I was hoping he\'d talk about the Infosys story and about the strides India is making. I like NRN identifying himself as a socialist at heart and capitalist in mind - my friends were keener to hear about that and more given the exciting stuff me and my other Indian classmates tell them about India and Infosys. Corporate Governance was just a little dry as a topic - here\'s hoping for more talks from Indian business leaders building on the new \"India Everywhere\" campaign...........

No doubt that Mr Narain Murthy is a great person, and somebody from whom we all must take inspiration in right spirit.
But hey wait, dont make any temple-site in his name. After all he is a human being. At some point of time he gets into some controversy, there will be at least some people to throw mud on his name, as it has happened at least once in the past. And a temple-site will be a super-soft target.
Each one of us has a lot to learn in life.

Narayanmurthy an icon of our times

It is said Genius hits a target no one else can see. An icon of our times is corporate leader Narayanmurthy who is not only an inspiring business talent but a corporate genius. It is said genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. A true leader makes ordinary people do extraordinary things. A true leader also makes people work enthusiastically and willingly towards predetermined goals and a vision. We surely have such a leader and a genius in Narayanmurthy.

What is even better is that he is not a 'closet leader', he willingly and encouragingly shares his views, values and 'secrets' to build a better society. This is his greatness and his courage.

We are looking forward to a web site dedicated to Mr. Narayanmurthy and Mrs. Sudha Murthy - not for hero worship but as an inspirational and information internet resource. Hope Infosys will take up this social assignment in the best interests of society.

This comment reflects a negetive / pessimistic thinking in you. What you call as "managers go to any extent to grab a project" is nothing but compitition. Fighting in compitition and winning is the key to success of any individual and any organization. If you leave it, someone else will grab that. If everyone stops doing this, there wont be any progress of mankind. Thats exactly what infosys or any other organization will do.
There is only one rule in this world - "Survival of the fittest". I think Infosys is good at it. Every person / organization has good and bad sides, learn to accept them both, fight in compitition and encourage to what others can do and you cannot. Dont whine.

Not so sure!!
by Anonymous on Feb 15, 2006 03:26 PM  | Hide replies

Well, the ground reality may be very different from what is expounded by Mr. NRN. Not that I don't admire what he has achieved. But since I have worked closer to the ground things look in sharp contrast.
A manager bills client for some things which 'ethically' he should not.
Though Infosys is a lot better than others in the trade, being a people-intensive service provider brings its own disadvantages.
A manager offers estimates less to grab a project. The marketing folks eulogize about skills while knowing that they just trained 1000 freshers on that. Even training of freshers, which is claimed to be equivalent of a BS degree from any US industry is done the short-cut way. Things just aren't right at the grass root level, is what I would say.
It is just a sheen that media has woven around it.

I totally agree with this. Its time media stops portraying a false rosy picture much contrary to what actually happens with the low cost offshore IT companies who would go any length to win a project. Every one knows how managers meet their revenue targets. Its an open secret how Infosys managed to get 300 odd acres of land in Mysore.
Narayan Murthy preaches what in reality his own organization doesn't practise.
We all are innocent until proven guilty. In India, the powerful people and organizations cannot be proven guilty becoz of the murky behind the screen activites.

It is people like Narayan Murthy who make us feel proud that we are Indians. I think this piece or Narayan Murthy's original speech should be made a mandatory lesson for every school and college going individual, especially management students, and should also be read by every entrepreneur, of every ilk.
