Cut the crap and get real.
by Srihari on Feb 19, 2006 09:13 PM

NRN's speech is child like or should we say childish. Who can find fault with his " all men must have good morals" kind of lecture.Somehow, he makes everyone feel that *only* his company runs on ethics and such noble attributes and the rest of the business houses in India are gangs of cut throat rascals. This is utter nonsense.
Afterall, his recent actions liking quitting from the airport board in a huff instead of standing up for what is right, pushing for special roads for his herds of coders and demanding huge tracts of real estate on subsidised rates from the Govt., reveal that he too is a man of straw. It is quite amusing to see him being compared with mighty Tata's, Birla's and even Ambani's.

It is time that we see through the hype and PR.

I also strongly feel that Ethics must be given high priority in the corporate world not only to motivate those who follows ethics but also to discourage the persons who does not. This is certainly one of the important motivational factors which we should talk and practice about.

Its fine that he gave a nice speech, but believe me you cannot "wow" an audience from a highly industrialized country with just this kind of talk. Business and ethics do go together, but it does not make sense to idealize the importance of ethics in business.

Hi , I fully agree with what NRN had to say on the courage to withstand all presurres and be committed to ethics. It really gives a good sleep, and ethics act as a soft pillow.

But dont you think it more idealism than realism. There are no concrete examples in his speech about following ethics and values. Just following proper accounting practices etc. amounts just to act within the law, nothing more.

Increasing shareholder\\\'s values...
by Vijay Kumar on Feb 16, 2006 01:07 AM

The whole notion of increasing hsareholder\\\'s value is again to enslave your company to foreign institutional investors.
Why this confidence is not instilled by the companies among domestic investors. I doubt if infosys or any other company don\\\'t list on NASDAQ and instead list on indian bourses only, there whoe notion of ethos will go haywire. All of there corporate responsibility will evaporate and they will start thinking how to gobble up all the money shareholders have put in the company. Thats why common indian investors never ever had any confidence in indian market which is still full of cheats.
Its only when big daddy(US) pours 1 doller in indian company to earn $500 bucks in long terms, Indian company talks of ethos, ethics and morality. This is again our mindset of serving our bosses. The compaies are no longer serving any indian cause but again serving FIIs.

ethics in business
by murli on Feb 16, 2006 12:01 AM

Most of the successfull personalities talk same and I see this here as well. Everyone agrees with that.
But no one really shares the early years of their business and how they managed thro those periods without compromising these ideals, if they really practiced that from the beginning.... If they could convince the majority that it is possible, it will be a real contribution to the society

Definition of Business...
by Chandra Shekar on Feb 15, 2006 10:48 PM

Mr. Narayan Murthy clearly articulated what I view as the right way of defining 'managerial economic principle'. He said, and I quote "corporate governance is about maximizing shareholder value legally, ethically and on a sustainable basis, while ensuring fairness to every stakeholder -- the company's customers, employees, investors, vendor-partners, the government of the land and the community". Most classical definitions leave out the important aspect of doing business - legal, ethical and fairness. Also, most businesses do very little to protect the interests of their other stake holders while trying to mamimize the profit for their shareholders. Mr. Murthy is setting an example for the corporate culture to incorporate these values and still grow in value as he has done for his company. I would further add that big corporations should also shoulder their social responsibilities in promoting health and education in their communities by funding these projects. Perhaps, the new paradigm of business should be 'Socialistic Capatilism' which will ensure growth and development of societies.

A True Dream for True Success without giving up values inspite of highly profit oriented market. I think a vision for future must drive for everyone. That is what Murthy said.
