I left Al Yousuf LLC in dubai and was offered a job by my friend Moses Alfonso who gave me a job in Ensco offshore with a five digit salary per month. Within 6 months along with my 2 other colleagues i was packed off from Qatar telling us that you are not suitable for the post of Administrative management inspite of working as an Accountant for almost 20 years in multinational companies like Wander Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Mumbai and also in the Gulf countries for over 6 years before i joined them I was sacked for no reason.
Your above description is that of a private sector enterprise. In PSU Job Safety is almost assured. However their websites also declare the Employees as their biggest assets. It is simply a clever ploy by Management to their efforts with minimum disturbance and with no add-ons to their pre-agreed salaries.

@ Vivek, the point being made here is, do not lie about "Employees are the biggest asset". I can accept the fact if the company says, "You and me are here for the benefit of the company and its promoters (Stock holders, Partners etc)".
If company feels the pay of employees have grown beyond affordable limit, talk to the employee about cost cuts, salary cut, Moving voluntarily a portion of employees salary to Margin Based Variable.
ReOrganize employees Salary as 1. Fixed Salary 65% (This is needed for employee to meet financial comitments like School Tuition, EMIs) 2. Variable Pay - 15% (Must meet based on performance) 3. Margin Pay - This a what employee can earn by making additional profit for the company. In IT Company it can be as simple as Additional Training , Organizational activities, Beyond office hour efforts, Working on RFEs, Providing additional Technological solutions to other accounts and Projects and so on.
Instead of finding innovative ways to fire employees, find innovative ways to extract more for less or for free.

@ Vivek, by the way, my wife runs a play school. The staffs and more importantly the Maids always find ways to escape work. Its not an option to fire and hire new Maids. So instead, my wife keeps a pool or additional money that can be claimed by picking and completing a host of additional tasks. Ex: 1. Weeding the play ground - Rs 250 2. Clearing the pebbles from ground - Rs 250 3. Cleaning the Overhead tank - Rs 250 4. Cleaning the Sump - Rs 300 5. Painting the Gate - Rs 300 etc.
This is in addition to the basic mandatory tasks. This encourages the Maids (they also bring their Husbands) to pickup host of work. If my wife were to engage a resource from outside , they will charge Rs 600 - 1000 for the same job , that only takes 2 - 3 hrs.
This way, she saves money, provide ways for additional income to her staffs, keep them motivates. They are only limitted by how much they can pick from the list of tasks.
Ofcourse quality is checked and money released only after accepting the quality of work done.
Some thing equivalent can be some in other industries as well. Companies can have a concept of Rent-a-coder, where apart from core work that needs to be delivered by fixed teams, other tasks can be put out for anyone to pick and complete. Developers can earn based on number of code completed. They are not fixed assets of an account, so there is less over-head.

Everything written in this blog is true word by word. I have witnessed these things in my professional career. Companies ranging from behemoth like Microsoft/Google/Yahoo to smaller ones are same when it comes to firing employees for one reason or the other. As long as you are productive and earn profits for the company, you are most welcomed. The moment you do not earn money for the organisation, you are worthless. And, any little altercation with immediate boss will ensure that you are the first one to exit.
Someone has rightly said that " Love your job and not the company coz u never know when company stops loving u. When you love your job company becomes secondary. Just keep on working and earn money. That's it. We go to office only to work and not to make friends or become a part of so called family. In modern times changing company is absolutely normal. Gone are those days when people use to stay in a company for 10 yrs or till retirement.

That someone is none other than our Honorable Ex President of India Dr.Abdul Kalam :)
When an employee is throughly professional in conduct, then the employee is branded as being not loyal to company. But when he tries to be loyal then the individaul meets this kind of fate. The TINA factor helps the company.
