yes! when the family used to be joint family others available to work on food making/worshipping home deities the woman bleeding was excused from certain works for three days On fourth day or even more ill bvleeding stops she would take bath and be allowed to work normally! DO NOT COMPARE WITH WESTERISED CULTURES OF TODAY! ITS VERY ESSENTIAL FOR MANY FINER REASONS !WHEN SCIENCE WILL DEVELOP FINER MACHINES TO DETECT DAMAGES ALL WILL KNOW! TILL THEN EITHER OBEY THE INDIAN CUSTOMS OR BE VICTIMS OF MISERIES!
Untouchable was not because of caste or blood. It was because of unhygienic living. They were not used bath daily and to wear same clothes for number of days. They were meat eaters whereas Brahnins were purely vegetarians. So their bodies could not fight virus because of poor immunity against bacteria. In older days there were no medicines. To safe guard their health, they wanted to keep them away maintain certain distances. Now also people suffer from virus. Thanks for the advanced medicines.
Ok I got it .. we got Nuclear bombs and aircrafts before even christ was born... its same logic here... what was logic behind banning so called untouchables or lower castes to be prohibited from entering temples... can the writer give one acceptable logic.. if yes then I have few more

As far as I know, firstly people were designated into groups based on their capabilities addressing various activities needed in the society; soldiers, farmers, scholars, sanity workers.
I think, then came the crooked minds and biased people with limited thinking capabilities who practiced customs without heading to the logic.
E.g. Ghosts on Banyan tree at night and thus not to sleep VS excess poisonous gas like CO released by the tree at night. Some one might have said about ghosts to carry the message rather than getting into science for lay man.
Back to your question; initially people must have restricted sanitary workers from entering temples when they were not clean; which was and is then carried forward by lunatics without logic.
'we got Nuclear bombs and aircrafts before even christ was born': I think we should talk about what we are now rather than delving in past. We have no proof to support or deny the claim from the statement; But I think we had technology when I look at pancha-loha (metallurgy) idols of gods centuries back, taxation from Chanikya for example.
The article seems educational for those who don't know; take it or leave it.
Recalling such (aircrafts etc) and un-touchables statement makes me wonder why you think like that!!!
If u have been effected by some superstition out grow it as B.R.Ambedkar or any other of your hero rather than a negative talk.

Have you ever put these questions? What is the logic in having your name as Rohit Sahni? What is the logic in calling yourself Indian? What is the logic in eating from mouth and doing the other thing from down?
The greatest superstition is believing existence of a super power who control our day today life and nothing moves without his wishes. There is no logic, no reason or no evidence to understand this superstition.

Need not look far. Look inside your own body with which we associate yourself. You have any control over the functions that go on inside? How is it all controlled? You ever did that yourself? All the functions of the body are done for you and not by you. You just put food inside the mouth and push it out later. How did all the amazing processes inside happen? Just by itself? Attribute this to nature? What is this nature? Have little time think about all these aspects.
I do not understand how can there be logic in superstitions. The whole writing is shallow and superficial, the author should have desisted to write, rediff should have desisted to publish! There is more to it than what our author could see.
Half knowledge professor explaining things here. How can you call these things superstitions when there is a scientific basis for these, as you yourself explained. The right word would be "PRACTICES"
