Ban on alcool has not worked anywhere. Drnk and drive offences should be brought under first degree murder charges in the event of death of a victim. The offence should be non-bailable. Police should have authority to hold the culprit incommunicado in their custody till the investigation is over. Another item is punishment which must be specific and mandatory with no descritionary powers for any authority to give relief.
I have been wanting to say somethings about our traffic laws. We have a very old law and it needs updating. If a person kills someone while he/she is driving and the and if the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs etc or the driver doesnt have a licence that person should be charged for murder. Even if the driver is caught with out a vaid licence or is drunk he/she should be banned from driving. Also the insurance should not be on the car but individuals and these drivers insurance premium should increase.
This is not a new problem..the west has dealt with this problem very effectively even though they still face this problem. It is a combination of education, strong and deterent law and quick justice that will reduce this huge problem.
But, knowing the Indian police, delayed and careless judiciary and political interference will keep this and other lawless problems in Indian soceity going or even getting worst.
Prevention of accidents requires the triad of Engeneering,Education and Enforcement. There has to be either respect or fear of law and punishment. Then the punishment should be really deterrant to both the drunk offspring and iresponsible parents.
It seems that even the Supreme Court deals these issues with total ban like the case of films on vahicle windows. So, go ahead SC, ban alcohol totally. The statistics are "10% of all accidents are caused by drunken driving" corollary is 90% of all accidents are caused by drivers who do not drink and drive. I wonder where this country is headed.
Licenses are available to even 12 year old and paying 50 or 100 rupess to a traffic police men you get away with speeding. The laws have to be strict and make sure that severe penalty is given to people who break them, serving as an example to others. Parents also have to be more responsible and given cars to children after they get a drivers license via the correct ways. If these actions are taken we will see a difference, it might take time but results will come
Tough laws followed by strict implementation are reqd to stopthe next gen from such evils. The Drv Licence need to be suspended if Drv is found Drunk. No Pol pressure should be exerted.Police can bring it under control with in short time
Though it is a pity that both the offender and the victim have suffered, we cannot condone such crimes. Freedom should be practised with restraint and responsibility. Money power, lifestyle, impact of movies and media, peer pressure should have adversely affected such offenders. Such severe punishments would serve as a reminder to all others to be cautious and respectful of others' lives. I favour such strong punishments as has been given in this case.
