Breath Analyzers
by Atul Singh on Nov 03, 2012 11:17 AM  | Hide replies

Make installation of breath analyzers mandatory in vehicles like smoke detectors in airplane toilets.

Connect the analyzers to the vehicle's engine immobilization system (EIS).

Program the breath analyzers to send signal to EIS to immobilize the engine if the analyzer detects alcohol content in the breath over a certain limit.

This can prevent such incidents from happening in the first place.

Tampering with the analyzers should be made a serious offense punishable with several years in prison.

With all the unnecessary features given in the high end cars these days, a breath analyzer will be a truly worthwhile addition!

From my experience having a drunk passenger is more dangerous than a drunk driver.

I apologize for not being more specific in my suggestion. The breath analyzer's sensor should be installed over the steering wheel or somewhere on the driver's side.

Strict Punishment

I live in London, people don't do that here and I have hardly heard any such incident happening in the last 6-7 years here. The reason- v. strict laws and people are aware and evolved in such matters.your licence would be cancelled forever and definite imprisonment. More awareness needed and more effective ways to catch drunk driving.

Publicize the offenders photos in news papers as it is no less than any other crime - drunk driving, knowing well that there is every possibility of causing accidents

There is no point in fining the drinking establishment. It is the act of drunken driving which is the offence here. Pubs cannot be verifying whether their patrons aim to drive or not after drinking.

They definitely can, I know pubs that offer drivers/'drop at home' to their customers.

That's like punishing knife manufacturer for a murder.

Pub's can definitely make additional effort to breath analyze the drivers when they are exiting the premises. Not a fool proof way, but helps.

There has to be a mixture of incentives & disincentives to prevent this.Good drivers without any accident records for 5 to 10 years can be honoured.Drunk drivers can receive two citations / fines after which their licence should be suspended for 5 years. Above all, implementation of traffic rules in letter and spirit is the need of the hour. India is good on legislation and regulations, but weak on enforcing them uniformly for all.

If govt is indeed interested in curbing road accidents, they should get a survey done across the nation and come up with statistics on traffic rule adherence.

Our traffic rules are not very different from other countries, just that we don't follow (most of the times, just like that) them.

Enforcement is a major part, but biggest thing is awareness. Awareness that when I am on road, I am under a set of rules and etiquette. Awareness that rules are made for our own safety, not for police. This will solve most of the problems and it becomes easy for enforcement implementation easier.

Having said that, administration should pave way for people who try hard to adhere to the rules, like clear stop lines at signals, lane demarcation, properly functioning signal lights, lay proper foot paths and guard them against occupation etc.

Strict implementation of law is the only way to discard such incidents on both the sides. It is v rush to pub. They don't. So ultimately v r responsible for all this fusssss.
