why do other countries dump failed models in India? and at such high prices? Iphone 4 has been recalled in a number of places.... iphone 5 is due to be launched in a couple of months. I advise people to wait a bit and get the better model.... sabar ke phal meethe hote hai
As of now, 1. Apple has the 2nd highest market cap worldwide at $300 Billion (1st is Exxon Mobil) 2. Apple beat Google as the most recognized brand worldwide (only ICICI is in teh top 100 form India). 3. Apple is the 8th most profitable company worldwide (at $14 billion recent year) 4. 2nd largest smartphone vendor worldwide (Nokia is #1 now but they are a dying brand - read their CEO's message of desperation recently about them being on a burning bridge and have hitched themselves with Microsoft killing their own Symbian OS). RIM/Blackberry fell to 3 from 2. Samsung is 4th.
I for one feel the Apple iPhone (and Android smartphones) is of very poor use in India because the infrastructure is not useful. It just ends up as a gaming device for mostly children of the parent's who own them. I prefer my BlackBerry any day. I have used iPhone, Droid, Pre and tried Nokia. iPhone/Droid/Pre are great in US. Nokia smartphones are terrible and cannot even be compared with the rest.
In the US, the iPhones look cheaper but there is a 2 year contract with monthly fees starting from $30 (the initial low price is subsidized by the telcos). Officially unlocked iPhones cost the same worldwide as in India.
There are very good Android phones but Samsung is not - just a copycat phone in terms of design and lag issue is notorious.
India maybe a big market but those are not for smartphones - they are predominantly for very cheap phones - in this segment you have the brands like Nokia, even Samsung, LG, lot of Chinese phones direct and indirect (micromax, maxx, spice, etc.)
Apple also neglects India because very few Indians would really pay for apps on iPhone. I have seen even highly placed officials (even IT) who jailbreak to install pirated apps on iPhone. Most people who buy iPhones spend Rs. 500 to get as many as pirated apps to be installed. I actually think this may be the primary reason that Apple is indifferent to the Indian market.
Also, Apple iPhone demand worldwide is a lot more higher (and Apple makes more money with appstore sales). To meet whatever limited market in India is very difficult and given the way piracy works in India, not a high priority.

iPhone 4 was released just one year back in Aug10 in USA not 2 years back. And iPhone 5 will be release by only next years Aug12.
Apple worst company ever in choosing the sensible global market. It gives Indians, the worlds second largest mobile market, last and least privilege always,as Iphone 5 is on its way in September, and Iphone 4 is launching now after a year. Those fools are just disposing off their old crap phones to Indians, through puppets companies like Airtel, must be assuring them for good profits...If talk about 3G connectivity this phone works on 2G sim as well with some limitations like video calls this is just the sort of cheap excuses that India was not 3G ready, many Nokia phones are coming which are 3G enabled since 2007 and previous Iphone 3 was also 3G enabled so why they launched that then. don't buy it,just the wastage of money..wait for next
My friend got it for around Rs 12,000 from London, right after it's launch. And it's a GSM, u can fit any SIM and not a CDMA. Duty charges are TOOO f in' much in India !!
