Has anyone from IIT/IIM got any Nobel prize in Science or Economics . Ramesh tells about the faculty or institute itself. My question is about Alumni who have gone to abroad .they have also not got any prize award . Recently ,an Indian origin person got the Nobel prize. He didn't even study in IIT/IIM.
Students are excellent if we accept that CAT / JEE scores is everything in life. To be frank, I dont think India has got any returns from IIT. I have seen so many Btechs in Mech/Chem engg doing either MBA and then sell detergent or prepare spreadsheet in consulting/banking. I have also seen more Mtechs writing code in indian IT firms. Why are we subsidizing IIT? Let industry pay for the actual cost.
IIM students may be great. But what do we achieve in the end? Do we create Google? Do we create Mckinsey? Do we create Goldman Sachs? No, we just work for whites in the end.

Buddy, why blame just IITs or IIMs. We have these top notch software companies. Did we create a google or a Facebook. Or a Twitter for that matter.

We couldn't create a google or Goldman Sachs because our society is a non entrepreneurial society, any body trying to something on his own is discouraged and forced to get employed and be contented with three times a day food
What wrong did he say? He didnt mean each and every professor. Most of them are really not Asia class, leave aside world class.True, science research in IIT's are very ordinary compared to TIFR, IISc, IACS,SINP, HRI, PRL, and some front line universities. IITs are however very good in technology stream. Those doing B.Techs. IIT is ordinary when it comes to M.S or Ph.D. I remember during 1991, when we were joining Universities for M.S, IITs were always the third choice after two university failures. So what wrong did he say?
Majority cite Lack of Infrastructure; Financial constraints; and the Existing Ecosystem for the poor performance of the faculty. These are as old as hills in any sector of economic activity.
It will do good if we analysed the root causes of the malaise and the remedial measures needed to revamp and restructure the "Education System" as a whole, particularly in the wake of the dramatic "Transformation" witnessed due to Information Overload and Digital Surge. 1975 cannot be 2000 or 2011. Instead of harping on mundane aspects we shall study the impact of personal digital knowledge system, network partnering, dynamic management, multicultural elements which require a high degree of adaptation and strategic changes among the faculty to be competitive and to make a mark in the international arena. Those who succeed will be rated world class. It must also be recognised that in this digital age the faculty need to set/reorient their "competing goals" and "altered roles" astutely to be a part of the new age FACILITATOR.
The two articles sadly do not touch any of these facets which are key to rub shoulders with international experts.
I am sure rediff in its request for responses would have received some highlighting these aspects, but so far the public posting is missing.
Dear Siddhesh Joglekar, While we understand you’re rational but data speaks contrary. Please let us know the contributions from these institutions to the field of Science and Management, how they have helped the scientific world. What has been the contribution of IIT & IIM professors in recent innovations in their respective their fields. Please let us know how many white papers or research documents are published from these institutions and to what extent have they been acknowledged by global community. These institutions have been successful in only appealing to human greed by advertising the salaries that their students have been hired at the end of the year. Please ask one question to a random sample of IIT and IIM aspirants "What has motivated you to peruse a course from these institutions?” and unanimous answer would be MONEY. Perhaps this answers all your justification.

Well said, buddy. You could not be more right. The whole issue boils down to fat salaries & campus selection. Otherwise we have seen any substantial contributions from these premier institutes.

But Mr Sidhesh Joglekar seems to be a chaparasi who could not get into a Goldman or a Merrill.....poor low status loser...
Hello Everyone, People were so quick to react to Jayram's comments on the quality of faculty in our IIT's and IIM's. I truly believe what he is saying is absolutely true the programs are absolutely out of sync with the outside world the faculty are pretty much in a complaisant mode of late there have been on contributions from these institutions in any International forums we don’t have any Nobel Laureates from these institutions. The only reasons these institutions are famous are for the salaries their students are offered at the end of each course which the institute proudly advertise. It time for the government to come out and commission an audit on the relevance of the courses and the competency of the faculty to delivery courses for the current industry requirements. There is no point in resting on the brand name that was created ages ago by a few good men. The onus is now on the current faculty to further the Institutions name by working hard and making the institution and India proud in the International forums. Too much of compliancy leads to lathery and further decay and decomposition.
