You are right. 'personal' refers to something our own or which belongs to us as in " personal belongings" and personnel refers to the people. Apersonnel manager is the one who manages the people or the employees.

I think personal is correct, because it says "letter addressed to the personal manager wouldn't fetch one a job', because there is no such designation.

I am sorry Mr Deepak. It is you who are wrong. The question here is not whether the word is singular or plural. The 2 words have different meanings - and the answer to the question is "Personnel" which relates to employees.

I was also amused when it said that i have answered wrong. I dont agree with the argument of Deepak Kumar abt plural and singular. Still I believe it is always Personnel Manager and not Personal Manager. There is no such designation. any one can confirm with a HR guy.

yes Mahesh, very true...thats way 'personal' is correct answer, because it says "letter addressed to the personal manager wouldn't fetch one a job as a professor in English Department', because there is no such designation and the applicant's English is not good.

Even i got this one wrong. But i read the sentence again and understood it was a trick question - "writing 'personal' will NOT get u the job"!
