Principal is correct . In the sentence the word required should denote "the most important "which is what principal means . Place the word "ideal "in the sentence and see how wrong it is . You are right about Personnel though .

I think personal is correct, because it says "letter addressed to the personal manager wouldn't fetch one a job as a professor in the English Department', because there is no such designation and the applicant's English is not good.

I do not think so. Personal means pertaining to an individual and not for others to know - as in "personal matter". But, Personnel is a group of people. You do not write to a "Personal" manager. He is not there to look at issues that are personal to an employee. He is there to look at issues concerining the group of people working in his organisation - which makes it "Personnel Manager".

Dear Hebbar, you are right.. thats why applicant wouldn't get the job as English professor. Please read the question again.. its tricky.

Even writing to the Personnel manager would not necessarily get you the job of an English professor! Some easier question could have been thought of in order to explain the difference between personal and personnel!
I think personal is correct, because it says "letter addressed to the personal manager wouldn't fetch one a job as a professor in English Department', because there is no such designation and the applicant's English is not good.

I think the question itself is wrong.
According to your logic it should have been - "Later adressed to th Personal Mannager would not be fetching oneself a job as professors in Angrej ke zamane ka jailor"

Pathetic quiz. And there is no such usage as 'personal' manager... and Vikas, what you are trying to infer makes it a question of logic, not English

Mr. Hickery Dichery, explanation is not dumb, but the interpretation could be.. :-(
answer to Q 12 is defenitely wrong. colleges do not have personal manager, but personnel manager. it also could have been reframed as 'personal letter to the manager'

Very true. It was quite easy. I am an accountant and have noticed people write "Trail Balance" instead of "Trial Balance".
