should be done in the sun
by kieran dsouza on Jan 30, 2011 12:57 PM  | Hide replies

our ancient rishis would have performed Surya Namaskar fully naked and in the open sunshine preferably morning.

Doing the same in an enclosed room with artificial light will not give you optimum benefit.

secondly, it is proved scientifically that the sun is beneficial to plants and animals alike. whereas plants use sun energy to photosynthesize food, animals produce vitamin D which is a super vitamin known to fight cancer, strengthen bones, improve immunity, reduce cholesterol

May be this is what the ancient Rishis already knew.

Sit in the sun without sun-block

Yoga is correct. Please note that the last 'a' is pronounced as short a and not long.
In Hindi, the pronunciation of the last letter is clipped. But, in Sanskrit, every syllable is pronounced separately.
Confusions happen because English is not a phonetic language.

dont do suryanamaskar all by yourself
by chaprasee@rediffmail.com on Jan 30, 2011 01:19 AM

without getting initiated by a qualified yoga instructor.

any sensible yoga master will first analyse your body and mind and accordingly suggest simple exercises and activities to fully tone yourself and once he or she feels you are fit enough will initiate you into surya namaskar.

i seriously suggest dont attempt surya namaskar by looking at some half baked articles like these

Permanent results only if u chant Sun's names...

and worship the Sun God....
Yoga is these days reduced to mere physical poses but actually it's a combination of physical and devotional practices. For example, with respect to Surya namaskar, if one also chants the 12 names of Sun God (or the 12 Adityas), the results obtained would be profound. Feel the presence of the Sun as a consciousness, not a mere mass of gas or energy. Offer worship to the Sun God, who sustains all life as well as non-life, in short everything in the world. You will be tremendously benefited.
