Ridiculous
by sangeeta reddy on Jan 19, 2011 11:01 AM

Inflation does not seem to leave education as well, should the middle class person stop aspiring for the premier institutes. Increasing the fees by 5 times is just too a ridiculous thought

fee increase IIT--A very bad decision.
by CHETAN PALAN on Jan 19, 2011 10:52 AM  | Hide replies

It is a very shocking& insensitive action from IIT authorities. If some one has to pay 250000 Rs per annum as fees for his/her child then it is becoming totally out of reach for many middle class people & forget those who earn less than 25000 RS/month.
In addition they will have to pay for hostel ,books & other expenditure That means nearly350000 rs expenditure for one person.

Does it make sense??????

We can not compare this with private colleges as IIT is not a private college .it is a centre of excellence & being supported by Govt.of india.

They may increase fees by 50 to 75 % if required to cover up for the cost increase.

No more IITs for general catagory middle-class students.
by SunilKumar De on Jan 19, 2011 10:52 AM

IITs (only the top 5) are famous because of general catagory (with few exceptions) meritorious students only and if fees are incresed 5 fold then all these good students would swith to NITs. So IIT would loose its charm. IIT is IIT because of Good students only not for its teachers.

IIT fees hike
by Pemmaraju Venkatasubbarao on Jan 19, 2011 10:46 AM  | Hide replies

Dear Sir,
Several of the IITan either go abroad for further study and ultimately secure employment and settle down there. Few others take the IIT route to enter civil services. It is the tax payers' money, mostly the middle class people who contribute towards this as black money goes untouched. Under such circumstances either the IITans ,may be compelled to work for the betterment of our own country than go and serve foreign countries having been educated at our cost, or they should be compelled to pay back with interest the entire cost incurred towards their education in the IITs. This aspect may be given a thought by all intellectuals in the larger interest of our natin.

Great...spare all those who are in position to work for the betterment of their own country( neta, babu etc)..allow them to make black money as much as they can but force the middle class janta to shell out more money to get IIt degree for whom IIT is the only way to turn into upper class from middle class.

Then all meritorious students would switch to NITs.
by SunilKumar De on Jan 19, 2011 10:42 AM

If so much increase is implemented then all meritorious students would switch to NITs because NITs offer RS 35000/year scholarship to first 2000 AIEEE rank holders.

Fee increase in IITs
by bharat sant on Jan 19, 2011 10:40 AM

For the purpose stated viz. self-sufficiency and autonomy, hike in fees seems appropriate. Scholarships and tuition-fee waiver for poor and deserving students is a good idea. I have two suggestions: (1) Involve 3rd and 4th year students in research/teaching assistantship as a means of earning while studying as also to motivate them to take up research and teaching as a career in the Indian context, and (2) introduce and encourage at the third and fourth year an interesting syllabus that will motivate students to take up teaching career. It will naturally include communication and other soft skills. Communication skills' emphasis should be on all the four modes: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Every one is saying that there is dearth of teachers, good teachers. Teaching is an art and science both and will stand by the individual even if he/she does not take up a teaching career.
