Adding medicine as a faculty to IITs is simply a political move. It would be better to improve the infrastructure of the existing medical schools rather tahn starting up new schools in so called IITs.By the way, other than the workers it produces, can any one name a technology developed in IITs that has world wide application? Keep producing the worker bees and don't meddle with the medical education. Already we have an elite institute called AIIMS;in the '70s they claimed to have developed an anti-pregnancy vaccine; where is it now?As of yet they have not even come up with a pain killer. These elite institutions are self anninted smart schools and they do not serve any public interest. Most of the technoly have to be imported still.

Do a quick comparison before judging IITs...pick a top 5th or 6th US university Eg : purdue, UIUC, Univ or michigan...and list its contributions to the feild of eng and technology. Compare that to IITS. They are not far apart...!!!
IITs are just producing engineering graduates who work for a company in India or abroad. IITs should rather focus on Technology research on all Tech diciplines.
By this way we can create/develop advanced technology in Inida itself and export the same instead of importing ideas, components from other developed nations for a huge cost.
with this IIT is loosing its core technical status.no need to start medical courses. I think, soon they will start Arts courses also.. with the vision of Indian Institute of Total studies.

The ratio of doctors is one of the worst in the world , we have one doctor per 10,000 people!!! , hence any additions welcome GR
It's obvious that they want to capitalize on IIT brand but loosing focus of its core values. Today it is MBBS, what will be next? MBA, Fashion Design, Pharmacy…
