Let IITs focus on its core competence
by Deepak Mohan on Sep 15, 2010 03:14 PM  | Hide replies

Just because institiutes like mit have non-technology courses it is not prudent for IITs to start such courses. IIT should concerntrate its efforts and resources to do what it is best at and the reason it was created ..i.e, creating world class technologists. Further, it can also concentrate on research and collaborating with indian industry for advanced research and development of new products and processes. Moreover Medicine is a specialised study. WE need to create seperate set of institutions dedicated to Medical studies and research rather than diluting the focus of IITs.

now the technology is used in medical science too... if IIT start working on medicine.. then it may come with "BEST OF BOTH THE WORLD".. take this that way,,, secondly no one can take anything away if they get into the medical science !!

IITs to offer medical courses: Good move or bad?
by Hebbar R on Sep 15, 2010 02:41 PM

The core meaning of IITs will be lost. If the Govt was keen, they could have started Institutions similar to IITs - call them say IIMed. These could have been Centers of Excellance similar to IITs.

It is just a politician who can tinker with something that is working well. Earlier, Arjun Singh tinkered and not Sibal.

READ TILL THE END. Hyderabad Police imposed Helmets on 2 wheeler riders because they could not control the traffic & had to introduce something new (even though it may be foolish) but in the name of safety of common man. If this is their logic, THE SAFETY OF MINISTERS IS MUCH SERIOUS ISSUE & HYD Police must ask the Ministers wear WHOLE BODY HELMETS WHEN THEY SLEEP OR WHEN THEY HAVE BATH OR GO TO TOILET BECAUSE ONE NEVER KNOWS WHEN NAXALITES OR MAOISTS ATTACK THEM (WHICH IS WHY THEY HAVE GUNMEN PROTECTING THEM) SIMILARLY KAPIL (MONKEY IF L IS SILENT) SIBAL HAD NOTHING ELSE TO OFFER, SO HE HAD TO GIVE SOMETHING NEW. THAT IS NEW WINE IN OLD BOTTLE. THE WINE WOULD BE LIKE HORSE'S PISS & IS ABSOLUTELY USELESS, THOUGH COST IS THE SAME OR HIGHER. SUCH TRIALS ARE INTRODUCED ONLY BY FOOLS WHO DO NOT WHAT THEY ARE TALKING & WHAT IS USEFUL TO THE SOCEITY & HOW TO REACH IT. THEY BETTER ASK SOMEONE WHO IS BETTER INFORMED IF THEY DO NOT KNOW (FOR SURE THEY DO NOT)

None of the Politicians or policy makers need to wear a helmet as they travel only in AC Cars.

More drain on the exchequer
by neeraj kulkarni on Sep 15, 2010 01:10 PM

One more drain on the countries exchequer. More than 60% of IITians simply run out of the country as soon as their course gets completed.

And the govt spends lakhs of rupees on each individual IITian, Why? After spending such amount of money it should be made sure that they serve the country for atleast 2-3 years.

useless
by Kiran Kumar on Sep 15, 2010 12:43 PM

There was no need for this weird decision. IITs are technical institutes. IITs started MBS cources many years back. Now MBA is not a very very different stream than engineering, still an MBA from IIT is no where near to the MBA from an IIM or any other top MBA college. Medical cources in IITs or engineering cources in AIIMS is useless and stupid thing.

This is a very great move. The biggest change that is going to happen is that the frustrated boys will get good girls for company. I was an IITian myself, I know the life there. This is definitely a great move. Another prospect is to have close collaboration between technology and health. That is also a big advantage. Fully support.Love you Sibal.

I know some would disagree but think a global picture and leveraging of good governance and I hope you would agree -

1. IIT is a good institute, not because of its name, but because of its Governance and Policies only. That dictates how to hire Professors and retain them, how to select students, how to train them and how to develop quality standards and maintain them. Indian in general lacks this and a few organizations have this. IIT must leverage it. They may or may not become best in Medical Sciences but such governance would help them. In the end it is the survival of the fittest, why not give them a chance?
2. Global world - We are in a global world. It is the survival of the fittest, and everyone gets the opportunities. Why not let them do it? If they are successful, could we increase the good medical professionals in the country? And think beyond, is it possible some of those become join hands with entrepreneurs and come up with good and competitive private facilities.

After-all why the hell limit a successful and good governance body ?

addendum...I saw others comments too. If you think space, reservation or loss of focus can be problems, those are not problems but challenges for them. Let them face it, find a solution and overcome these. This holds not only for everyone in the world. If you think your child has never lived alone, so cannot do higher studies in a different state, that is not true. Let him face it and he will work through the challenges of food, shelter and everything.

Not a wise decision
by Praveen Chhabra on Sep 15, 2010 10:13 AM  | Hide replies

There are various issues and questions
1. Where will the required space come from?
- As far as IIT Delhi is concerned, there is already a dearth of space. 100 students are cramped up in one lecture theatre in some courses. Plus there have been non-IIT setup like NIIT in the campus.
- A wholesome view of a campus with study space and open pastures for sports is diminishing.
- Hostels are already over-utilized. There are long queues in the mess during lunch hours. Students prefer to eat in canteens various times during lunch rather than wasting time coming back running during 1 hr break.

- Already the newly launched IITs require setup and are holding classes elsewhere.

- I think IITs still require more setup in order to account for new seats for reservation. Is that done?

- IITs will lack focus now. Already some MBA programs been started. This is not a University, is it?

- Is there a lack of medical colleges that IITs are being picked for? If yes then why not setup a focussed program of launching new medical colleges instead. After all, IITs do not excel in medical education nor have they any proven record for medical education that they are being picked for setting up medical teaching facilities. Who will benefit from it?

There is still a lot more to ponder about before going for this decision. I have listed just a few points.

upgarde VJTI SP colleges also so that they can pay the salaries to the staff also it is heard that VJTI staff does not get salaries in time so they do not teach in class at all but take private tutions and teach in VIDYALANKAR classes so students join classes but the poor students fail & quit engineering course & frustrate?
Dr. Mokashi who died of excess alcohol drinking was partner in vidyalankar clases after VJTI job?
