All intelligent not from IIT/IIM

Three Cheers for Indian Managers !

Dr. Keshab Nandy

Senior Vice President & CVO,

Tilaknagar Industries Ltd.
(Director,Prag Ltd.& Surya Ltd.)

The recent “Melt Down” has a lot of management lessons for the industry managers as well as management educationists in India. It has also demolished a lot many myths; and the biggest one of course is with regard to management messiahs like Harvard Business School (HBS) et.al. Without going into the details of the cause and effect analysis of the Melt-Down, that started in the US, doing its spiraling effect across the globe, it is a staggering thought as to how so many management experts in the US, (from HBS included), who have preached and taught us for so many years about the invincible virtues of American style of management, could not handle the Melt Down as effectively as we all expected them to. In fact, if we will look back to different countries’ track record, we have to note with pride that it is the Indian managers who stood out so proudly at the top. Special mention must be made of the managers in Banking Industry led by Reserve Bank of India, who with their adroit managerial ingenuity succeeded in insulating the Indian industry and covered it so well not to get devastated under the Melt Down onslaught from across the border. But, as management thinkers, our celebration must be much more wide spread and thought pro

But, as management thinkers, our celebration must be much more wide spread and thought provoking. It is pertinent to note here that none of the banking managers who successfully insulated us from the Melt Down impact protecting our growth rate to a large extent had studied management in any IIM. Many of them have either not studied management at all, or have studied at some down-town management schools including through distance education. Similarly, during my last visit to China when I had the occasion to address a group of management students in Beijing, I was astounded by one of their extremely well read Professors pointing out to me accusingly as to why we do not celebrate the success of our managers in many critical areas where they have brought awe-inspiring glory for India

He animatedly pointed out that when one American family in a Star hotel spends in the region of 2000 Dollars on a dinner and your managers and technologists produce a car (Nano) at about the same price, how has your country recognized and rewarded such great technical and managerial skills of such great minds who conceptualized and revolutionized the automobile industry with their Nano effect. He wanted me to ponder over and give me feedback as to how many engineers involved in this Nano project are from the IITs and how many managers who made it happen are from IIMs ? I could not reply readily but I am sure either the number will be ‘nil’ or ‘just a few’.

He went on and on, to cite the success of “Chandra Yan” project by our research scientists by giving me in money terms that such a project by China had cost them twice the amount; and such a project in US had cost them six times of the amount Indian scientists had spent on such a remarkably successful project. He again asked me how many of the scientists in this Chandra Yan project were from IITs. Again I am sure the answer will be either ‘nil’ or ‘just a few’

He further went on to remind me that in the pre-globalization era, the only area where India had established its name in the international technology scenario was Space Industry, spearheaded by ISRO, DRDO and of course, scientists of eminence like Dr. Satish Dhawan and Dr. Abdul Kalam etc. He was asking me how many scientists at that time and even today in ISRO and DRDO are from IITs. I am sure, my answer again would be either ‘nil’ or ‘just a few’. He, in fact provoked me with the above sterling realization when I had in fact, casually asked him that, for developing the fastest bullet train in the world by China recently, how many engineers and managers in this project had studied in Europe and America.

. He really got provoked and while banging me with the above questions, teasingly explained to me that there is not a single engineer or manager involved in the fastest bullet train project who studied abroad, or in any Chinese Institute of Technology or Management (they don’t have anything like that!). He emphatically clarified that all the engineers and managers involved in developing this fastest train in the world are from “down-town” Engineering and Management Schools in China and none has studied or understands English language

When looking out for and developing “cutting edge” over the competitors, has come up as the biggest obsession and driving force with the industry leaders of the time, it is only imperative that they will have to look for more creativity and innovation and more of “Jugad” among the managers to keep their industries one point up above the competitors. Hence, there is an urgent need in the management schools and through mentoring in the industry, to motivate our budding managers to Dream Big and chase the same with robust passion. This is important, because all of us know that all important strides in the annals of history have been made by people who knew how to dream incessantly

. He concluded by saying that India should look more inwards rather than outwards because compared to China, Indian engineers and managers are world class by themselves. Besides, like in China more the “down-town breeding” managers have, more innovative and aggressive they are, to succeed in difficult circumstances and make their mark in the national and international arena.
Being associated with different management schools and through my long years of industry experience, I have always found breakthrough thinking and innovation in our managers even in apparently chaotic situations. They come up with several out-of-box solutions to solve intractable industry problems, which we sometimes disparagingly brand as “Jugad”.

Therefore, harvesting dreams from the unconscious mind, programming them in the subconscious so that they drive the body, which is a slave of the mind, to create cutting edge solutions for the industry, has to be the biggest ideation process for the Industry managers and students alike.

Anumula deserves all the applause and laurels. But do appreciate that hardship that has reduced a lot for giving new pattern paper with multiple choice ques. only compared to Theory based mains paper earlier for everybody. But it should have come earlier, there are different skill set required for MCQ than Theory Based Q. MCQ goes for knwoledge cum elimination of unusal choices but in Theory Based Q there is no option of elemination write in a clean ligitimate way what you know... Older timers had a hard time really...

Dear VS,
I don't understand why you chose to comment that the IIT JEE is over rated.I am sure that examinees would vouch for the fact that questions posed in this exam are (on the whole) much tougher than those set in other engineering entrance exams in India. The level of education in the IITs is quite high, often higher than those in other engineering institutes.Sure, this is largely due to the fact that investments in infrastructure in the IITs is quite high, and because of this they manage to attract the best faculties. Recruiters flock to the IITs every year, more than they do to other colleges.Let us call a spade a spade, shall we?
If other colleges want to catch up with the IITs, they have to invest in infrastructure(and the government will have to play a big role in this). This will result in them being able to attract talent. And very soon, you will see, they will be setting papers which might leave even the IITs behind in terms of level of difficulty.

Loan shark- if u have inferity comlex with IIT or obsessed with it. keep with U.
There are many intelligent & sucessful people in India who never had this complex & they rose to the top even without IIT.
So don't poolute others mind & treat IIT just as one of the premium institute- nothing more.
This over hyping is only in north India where there is no other opportunity & lots of unproductive population reside there.

Jithendar is IIT Topper- Only simple guys make it to the top!!
by Prosenjit on May 28, 2010 07:31 AM  | Hide replies

When you follow what Jith said about his success in IIT, about his preparation, about his interests, about how he relaxes..., you see a commonality in his traits- Simplicity. More than a decade-and-a-half back, when I was 'preparing' for this exam, I had the privilege of interacting with a Physics professor- Mr. Kuruppam (I might have got the name slightly wrong). He marched into the class, and said: "IIT problems are so simple they can be solved by a child. But you can't solve IIT problems. Why? Because you are not a child!!".The class broke into laughter. I laughed as well. This guy must be nuts. Only couple of years later I came to know that the guy spends the greater half of every year in a college in France teaching maths. It took me a decade for the truth of his words to sink in. Be simple as a child, understand basics thoroughly, have fun solving problems, look around and see science in all things around you, and make it a habit to enjoy your life. Only then will you have focus. Only then cracking problems for hours will not be a load. I got nowhere near getting into IIT. But I suspect that Jith made it because he made it a point to keep the child in him alive and kickink!! Kudos to you Jith!!!

IIT standards??

"I am interested in physics. I am looking at joining IIT-Mumbai and majoring in ECE while physics will be the minor subject. The reason I am looking at IIT-Mumbai is because some of my friends and I decided to go there and I am in touch with some professors there. Also, there are a few of my seniors there as well."

He likes physics but doesnt want to major in it!!

He wants to join IIT bombay coz he has some friends there!!

One expects an IIT topper to have some maturity, May be he could have said that he is inclined towards research and IIT bombay is the best place for it...he sounds like a small kid when he says he wants to join a premier institute just for the sake of a reunion with friends!!I think this guy sounds so immature!!

No wonder the IITs are losing their charm!!

Congratulations Jithender.

Interests change very often... noe he's interested in physics. In engineering, he may not enjoy it the same way!
