by SagarAliasJacky on Jan 16, 2010 11:36 AM  | Hide replies

##I'm running to win, no more. However, even if I don't win I will go back to Kochi a happy woman," says Rajam in her native Malayali.## I am a keralite . But i dont understand what is native malayali. The language spoken by the people of Kerala is called Malayalam not Malayali.Malayalee is used to refer to a person who hails from kerala and speaks Malayalam.

by Dev on Jan 16, 2010 08:28 AM  | Hide replies

doesent she get any money when she wins prizes ????? just ridiculous.
govt should atleast give her a good govt job.

rich sports boards like BCCI and IPL etc should fund these other elite athletes. Cricket boards should give prizes for such events..after all there is a connection between fitness and cricket ,too.

how about some of the keralite private companies and individuals all pool up and give her a house or few lakhs.

You r right dear. This country & govt. only cares for the bloody cricket & cricketers.Cricket is all for them. But we also are equally responsible for this as we appreciate this bloody cricket always. We also should appreciate other games than cricket. We should create donations or funds for such athletes because the Govt. is all blind for other games. They only have the money to fill the pockets of cricketers & the bloody BCCI as well as their own pockets too.All money is for cricket.Shame on this system.

why you people are against so much for Cricket, just because the BCCI is the richest board? man they have managed the sports well, gradually making it popular, unlike other boards like hockey, which gradually they have ruined. and are pauper even to pay to their players. CRICKET IS NATIONAL SPORTS FOR ME.

u r right. BCCI should be commended for good management. They are even lobbying for moving ICC to India.
Along with lalit Modi and IPL (which is actually BCCI offshoot, isnt it ?)they rode on the 20-20 wave at the right moment. full kudos for capitalising on the opportunity.

gooda , thats not true..indians have interest in tennis,golf,F1 racing,football,hockey..etc
these other sports are not properly promoted.
football is 100% a game fit for indians.just no promotion.if there is one football sachin tendulkar, everybody will suddenly take it up.
athletics really need expert promoters. In europe they have the golden event, which is attracting crowds now with big prize winnings.
maybe athletics could be affiliated to cricket and they could have an athletic events before an IPL match?
In USA, the games of baseball, basketball, football, tennis, golf etc all run concurrently ..mainly due to expert promoters.the interest is drummed up

I think she is great that she does her job and earns her money. She is not ashmaed of being a janitor. She should be respected for who she is. Yes she could also function as a sports teacher or something. I don't understand why everyone wants a house for govt grants for free! It's great this woman does her job and earn her living. By the way does she qualify for SC/ST grants or jobs?

Why should the BCCI give them money. That is the government's job. BCCI should not be blamed because it is doing its job professionally . The reason that other sports persons face problems is because their sports posies stink. It's not the fault of Cricket.

in 2009, an indian male has come 3rd or 4th in sydney marathon..which is huge achievement. such achievements really do improve indian image a lot.indians dont realise but westerners are hugely fitness conscious. and if you beat them in such events ,they are very impressed.
i was very proud to see an indian at top level in this marathon. can an indian win at olympics ?????

Passed
Its not cricket..it is the association..
by Passed on Jan 16, 2010 02:20 AM

What brought Cricket to the level it is?
Let me give you a hint...It is not the the game..

It is BCCI...a association which was so concentrated in making cricket a house hold name that it took every effort to:
1. promote the game,
2. promote the players,
3. woo the companies and
4. utilize national resources for FREE

May be last point surprise you, but it is a truth..while lot of other games, players have to pay for using our national stadiums and play grounds..apparently cricket has saved a lot of money in these category as the masters of the BCCI always made sure that while they are paying least to nation, they are making maximum.

The problem with other sports are that, while we have much more talented people, the Masters of those games, choose to concentrate more on just somehow getting them booked for international tours. Otherwise how come the team of officials going for olympics are always more than the number of athletes?

Worst if the people of India, they waste their days in following stupid cricket, while totally ignoring other sports. Plus even our so called government media is to blame, who will fight to get the rights of crickets games, but will not even be bothered to show other games.

I think the solution is encouraging these games at local levels, while trying to push for more higher level competitions.

In this country, unless you are a cricketer, you don't get anything. No job, no money, no sponsors. Look at the pathetic condition of our hockey players. And hockey is supposed to be out " national " sport.

But then what is the use of blaming the Government and companies ? How many of us watch any sport other than cricket ?

Why should it be the job of govt of India and not the people/companies around her! A school can hire her as a sports teacher. Why blame evrything on governement?

Dude, if you are writing a piece of news then at least refer to the people accurately. Why can't we expect that? While the issue reported is heartrending that does not mean that your usage should not be correct?
