comparisons all the time...
by vishal garg on Apr 13, 2010 03:44 PM

I believe what kills all of us is comparison, and this is what we learn in our schools too no matter be it b-school or just any other school. We were never given a lesson as an individual and top of that, mostly the comparison is done in terms of financial status only. Many a times i see people who just dreamed about something & followed their own vision never actually required such education.
We should be imbibed with values and also should be given awareness only at preliminary levels only so as to make proper choices so that we should not regret ourselves before its too late for us.

Dream-Dream n Dream.
by zainul sayed on Apr 13, 2010 01:30 PM

I had privilage of working with quite a few IIMs in my professional life. The guys are brilliant, and there is no second thought on this. But, few qualities that are required to be sucessfull in life on any front are totally missing in the guys and dreaming is one of the most important aspect to become sucessfull in life. Many sucessfull people in this world have been a great dreamers.Right from the time of ancestors of TATA,Birla,Godrej have all been the dreamers and they saw to it that their dreams realised into the reality and mind you those days neither the IIMs were there nor the computers.
It was the team work and strong bond between employee and employer that made the Indian business houses sucessfull in India and the world.Latest example is Bill Gates and his team of people who went on to become the greatest team ever,Bill dreamt and his team brought the world to their feet. The team spirit is terribly missing in IIMs,they simply neither believe nor trust their fellows in the team.
Guy / Gals at IIMs be a dreamer first then find the guys /gals suitable in your team develop a very strong bond among each others, trust each others.Very Simple mantra to be a good Boss or a sucessfull businessman or a leader whom people trust.

by akash agarwal on Apr 13, 2010 01:08 PM

i had the privilege of learning from Satya during the early years of Career Launcher in Delhi. what he has said is actually true. as such the same gets reflected in 3 IDIOTS which shows the same attitude in most professinal education institutes.

What IIM did not teach me
by raman govindan on Apr 13, 2010 01:06 PM  | Hide replies

no institution even the best in the world do not teach all the necessary knowledge, attitude to it's students. parents, community, society, nation or religion also fall into the same cxategory. also falls into such category is the time/period of history we dwell in. they may atleast give introduction to such one.

success depends upon individual's effort and how he had understood the the environment and tackles it. again it depends on randomness.

let us prepare ourselves well, make the best effort and let us not be overjoyed by the success or disheartened by failure.

i admire Ian Lendl, the tennis star. his aim was to train and perform better than his opponent on his best days and on his own off form days, the crowd rooted against him. he stayed close to top for a long time than his fellow players. he was no product IIT, IIM, harward or MIT. and again remember success is the seede for failure and vice versa.

Its not IIM Problem nly?
by vijay sharma on Apr 13, 2010 01:04 PM

When reorganization and meaning by Indian Society is Money only. Then it hardly matters if one is IIM, B.Tech, MBBS or any talented person. Until you end up with huge money by any means you are not a sucess. Either you become a non matric nation player, a thug property dealer, a nauch(dancing) girl cum item girl in films. If you have money then you are HI HI HI ...... in High circles. This is Indian Scenario of today. Ok. So the best thing is be good for yourself and be happy.

Me Too
by mahibhushan jauhari on Apr 13, 2010 01:02 PM  | Hide replies

I have been a student at an IIT and an IIM. I agree with the author. The education must remove insecurity from students mind so that he can achive full potential. We are so oriented to financial success that we do not want to take any chances. Experimenting, dreaming and dealing with failed attempts are never taught to us.Cooperation is a strict no no because we are supposed to do better than the other guy/gal.Thus we have become a nation of individual brilliance and poorest team work.

this is a laughable article. b school is not there to imbibe self belief in you or to teach you cooperation or to make you dream or how to choose your own path. It is there to teach you various aspects of business and that it does (at least IIMs do). why do you overdepend??

I do not know if you are from a B-school, but if you are, this is exactly what the author has stated as missing in the system. if you believe that B-schools are not to teach you traits like co-operation, then you are grossly mistaken. While they may not put that as part of your syllabus, they need to be taught nevertheless.

Finally business is not just about business plan, financials and customer analytics. it is about stating and managing business successfully and for that you need soft skills.

cheers
