iPad Pros and Cons
by Vidhya Shankar on Apr 06, 2010 09:04 AM

The iPad is a compelling device. But I see no use in India, none of the video services except Youtube work in India. It makes a wonderful device to take it to class for taking notes, but in India you are not supposed to take a laptop to class even in college level, except for MBA students.

As for the Apps. You will be using only few apps. I don't think there are apps to buy tickets online in india or make hotel reservations. We don't even use Google Maps to get directions in India..

Apple's best products are the line of Macs and the ipods. The iphone and ipad are compelling devices, but once you take the Apple branding away, its just another device.

Seven reason..
by sk ms on Apr 05, 2010 04:48 PM  | Hide replies

1) You have lots of money and dont know what to do.
2)Your money is not hard earned. Either its through inheritance or some other means
3)You don't care what you get .All you case is what people think and say
4)You don't know the concept of ROI or Value for money
5)You dont need it but want it ..
6)You don't want to carry it. (If you can carry a 9.7 inch screen you can carry a 10.2 inch netbook as well)
7)You just go by what you see in advertising....

Well there may be more but I am stopping at 7.
Someone mentioned download freak:) well is the download free ? else u can do it on home broadband as well.. so whats the big deal about download Anyways let the enthusiats try it and see meanwhile someone other players are going to come with a cheaper and better valued alternative.

People who can afford iPad will buy it. Why are you concerned about others money?

Do you eat food at all or just smell the food to fill your stomach?

Oh I didnt know that an iPad is as important as food. Anyways my point was same as yours. No one is stopping people from buying it afterall every product need some buyers initially on whom they can test it. One correction ! not everyone who can afford an iPad nee dto buy it.Sensible people dont buy things because that can afford it, they buy it only if they need it.

by Darshan on Apr 05, 2010 04:07 PM

Apple is a brand and you pay for the image.Apples business model is that so if you have some extra cash you can show off a bit..otherwise from usability point of view apples products were never far reaching. How many of us know Mac as a machine ?

Can it phone?
by timepass on Apr 05, 2010 11:29 AM  | Hide replies

Does this thing work as a phone too? Nowhere in apple site it says its a phone. What exactly is so good about it? All the features are already available on my 1yr old Sony Ericsson Xperia.

Game changer?
by Aravind Raman on Apr 05, 2010 10:26 AM

iPAD is being touted as a game changer in the Tablet PC and Laptop market. However, even a cursory analysis shows that it is overpriced for what it offers compared to many proven notebook models. As one poster has pointed out, the features Apple introduces start to become a standard feature later which is welcome.
But I have my serious doubts on this being a game changer at least in India. US & Europe market is driven more on brand image and it may still succeed there in spite of its high price coupled with Apple's proprietary nuisance!

Seven reasons why you should not buy this device
by Charan Chaupal on Apr 05, 2010 09:15 AM  | Hide replies

1. There are several netbooks which weigh less than a kg, have 10 inches screen, and come with a physical keyboard and full fledged laptop features.
2. You cannot type comfortably on a touch screen, especially when it is flat. For viewing, screen should be perpendicular to eyesight, while for typing, keyboard should be flat. Combine this with limited viewing angle of an LCD, and you will appreciate the difficulty in typing and viewing comfortably at the same time on this device.
3. This thing has no USB port, just a single proprietary port. To attach any standard peripheral device, you will have to buy an adapter, which, going by apple's track record will cost at least in four figures (rupees). For attaching multiple devices, you will further need an USB hub. Imagine the pain of carrying all this together.
4.Battery is the biggest pain point in Apple devices. Any standard netbook gives 8 hours of battery life these days. But Apple could never trust its users enough to let them change their batteries. So, forget about using a spare battery on those long trips. Also, Li-ion batteries die out in two years. Then, you cannot just replace it, but you will have send your device to apple, pay them huge amounts of money, and get it replaced.
5. Everybody needs multitasking. We all love to listen to music while checking those boring mails, or relaxing with our favorite novel. This thing can handle just one app at a time, which will result in royal waste of time.

6. It seemingly doesn't offer any advantage over a netbook, except for its cool looks, which is highly negated by its price and restrictive features.
7. I hate the high handedness with which Apple treats its customers. I was an Apple lover due to their innovation and user friendliness (i still appreciate them for it), but now their arrogance baffles me. They consider their customers both as dumb (those who can't change their own batteries) and potential thieves (Apple enforces strictest DRM protection, which sometimes makes playing even perfectly legal copies of movies or songs on their devices a pain in you know what.

Reason 8
by mang on Apr 05, 2010 06:28 AM  | Hide replies

Reason 8. You OR your dad has lot of money and don't know how/where to spend it. Then go and buy iPAD instead of buying a good laptop for the same money.. (and don't mind if some one calls you 'You PAD')

I used to think like you but over the time changed my opinion. Most products like this (ipad) when released are overpriced and seem completely unnecessary. For these products to mature and become reasonably priced, some "crazy" people and people with surplus money need to buy. Without these people, there would be no innovation.

I thought iPhone is an over-priced device that only crazy people would buy. But look a today, the market has many touch-screen devies that are becoming more and more affordable.
