Girls do not follow young men. Girls are stalked and the men doing this are a pathetic lot. Stalking is followed by rape and murder. Informing this to family is the best option, the sooner the better. The basic psyche of stalking is to capture and conquer; this mental malady can be done away only with counter-strike, the strike should not miss and it has to be swift and unobtrusive. Girls have to be bold and have to escape the path of the stalker, pure evasive tactics alone is the remedy. Evade and anonymously strike the persistent stalker to hurt him!

Exactly. The girl need to confront the stalker before he goes to next stage. Though I am not sure if "Hurting" a stalker will help as it might evoke the "Revange" mentality. But again, the options are need to analyze on the situation basis and sure the girl must inform her family ASAP.
First, the Indian Movies, Hindi/Tamil/Telgu or any other language, make stalking the best idea to get the girl you love. Recent example is "Love Aaj kal". Now, the theory behind Stalking, normally, is the guy likes the girl but do not have enough courage to talk to her. Now when a guy start stalking, it's not his motive to harras the girl, it's just the lust or the love which make him wanted to see her as much as possible. One way for girl is to tell her parents or if has enough guts talk to the guy directly, confront him and all might be stopped. Most of the guy are in illusion that girl also like him as she never confronted. And I am talking about normal cases of stalking. Some of my friends did years ago and I observed their psycology behind this. A few of them were indeed badly in love with the girl but that's an other story. :-)

Now about the girls, You can not imagine to what extent they can go. I know a girl who was in love with a guy. she not only called him at odd times but she used her and his common friends to actually spy on him. So, the girls are getting more dengerous then guys now a days :)
It happened to my cousin brother. He was stalked by a ugly fat girl for several months in his Engineering college. She used to call him up at odd hours, tell everyone that my brother proposed to her, and even called up my aunt saying she was her future daughter-in-law !! My brother, being a decent chap, kept quiet for several months before confronting the girl. Then what happens? She broke down and alleged it was happening the other way round!!
Since then I have begun to take these stories with a pinch of salt
While I agree that men who stalk girls should be severely punished, we should also look at women who stalk and harass boys and men. This is possible and happening. People generally tend to ignore this issue. Some female teachers and bosses harass men students and subordinates. This should be considered as sexual harassment by law.
As long as we watch movies which glorify stalking, there won't be end to this.
And girls should develop courage to confront whoever is stalking them and tell them to get off. Or they should confide in someone who can counsel or scare the stalker away.

Girls should not confront the stalker upfront as this may lead to a very bad situation. Stalking is a mental malady and the psyche is that of an animal. Inform close family, do not take help from a third party, escape first and then counter-strike swiftly in an unobtrusive way.
The stalker cannot be scared away, he should be hurt badly in an anonymous way when he least expects it. Irrutiidi ...
hit them hard whenever one feels being stalked. these are people who are weak and very scared. ONce you have to face them and your worries wil be over 4 ever.

Do not confront directly and expose yourself. Read 'Man Watching' and 'Cat Watching' by Desmond Morris, stalking is a mental malady, dangerous anyway as it is a direct intrusion on an individual's privacy.
