Thyroid is no more a disease. For this you need to reduce your wife's weight which is also a major cause of thyroid. DO call me for more info on these at 9818264188.

They are the same drug made by different companies. It is like aspirin or crocin made by different companies but the effect is the same.

eltroxin and Thyronorm are same medicines but different brand names the difference lies in the packeging eltroxin comes in a bottle and thryonorm comes in strip this is where the differnce is it is claimed that in the bottle it does not remain stable and deteirates over a period of time where as with thyronorm it is not so. how far is this true one has to find out. studies need to be conducted by independent authorities. hope this answers your query

You are likely to be suffering from Hypothyroidism and the treatment is likely to be lifelong. It is only a replacement therapy, meaning that the hormone that is deficient is being given to you.

The doctor is right. In fact, she might need three tablets daily at least for some time. All the tablets are taken as a single dose in the morning at 6 AM on empty stomach and nothing other than water, if needed, should be taken for next half an hour.

I was almost Court Marshalled in 1980 for giving radio-iodine 131 to an unmarried female patient! Then itself there were a lot of changes.

Worldwide I-131 is being used for nearly seven decades now and its efficacy in controlling hyperthyroidism has been proved beyond doubt. There are practically no side effects other than the development of Hypothyroidism in certain percentage of patients depending on the dose given. In any case, hypothyroidism is easier to control. In fact, the patient him/herself can adjust the dosage in hypothyroidism once the doctor initiates treatment.

There are three methods of treating Hyper Thyroidism at present.

The first one is medical line of management where Neomercazole or Propyl Thio Uracil is given for periods ranging from 6 months to 6 years or more. I have seen patients taking NMZ for more than 20 years!! The treatment is simple but tedious, requiring visit to the doctor every few months and estimation of serum TSH every now and then. It is costly, costing on an average, about 5-6 thousand rupees annually. Thus, assuming that the patient needs treatment for four years, a total of 25 Thousand is needed.

The second one is surgery: It is needed for patients with huge goitres basically for cosmetic purposes that too when quick results are needed. It is the most risky - risk from surgery, risk from anesthesia, risk of damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve that supplies the voice box, thereby resulting in alteration of voice, risk of scar formation, and last but not the least, heavy drain on one's pocket depending on the city where one stays.

The third and the most important one is the I-131 therapy. It is a one/two dose treatment, safe, simple available in all major cities in the country, and relatively inexpensive. A single dose normally costs up to four thousand rupees. Follow up is done for a period of up to one year in most cases. Thereafter, patient may report to the doctor if there are any problems. The risk of development of cancer or problems with conception is negligible. I have myself treated more than a thousand patients with I-131 & am yet to see a single case of cancer over the last 27 years. On the contrary, babies born to my patients were healthier than other babies!!

Hence please go ahead with I-131 therapy fearlessly & get cured within a matter of weeks.

To have an accurate assessment of hyper thyroidism, you need to get the Free T3 and Free T4 done. In any case, such changes are possible. Your child will not develop hyperthyroidism if you are feeding the child. However, risk of development of Hyperthyroidism at a later date is higher in your baby since in some cases, the disease is familial.

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism include lethargy, sleepy feeling, weight gain, loss of appetite, constipation, hair loss, change in voice, coarse and dry skin or facial swelling.

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism include lack of sleep, hyperactivity, weight loss, increased appetite, increased frequency of bowels, increased sweating, tremulousness, excessive sweating, anxiety and palpitations. Depigmentation of skin may occur in both conditions.

Both these conditions may or may not be accompanied by goitre.

Goitre occurs as a swelling near then lower part of the front of the neck. In most cases, it is painless except in a condition called as Acute Thyroiditis where a painful swelling occurs.

Cancer of Thyroid might occur as a swelling described above, or a palpable lymph node on the side of the neck. It is relatively slow growing and curable in almost 95% cases and hence one need not be worries too much.

In all cases of goitre, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology is essential. Some cases may need serum T3, T4 and TSH estimation. A few cases may need a scan - Ultrasound or Nuclear. Very rarely a CT or MRI might be needed.

Don't worry! Thyroid diseases are the BEST among the diseases & thyroid cancer is the BEST among the cancers, since these are easily treatable.
