Reminds me of an Telemarketing Incident
by on Jul 20, 2007 01:11 PM  | Hide replies

Last year lot of us were getting harrassed by calls for taking loan from ABN Amro. Inspite of repeated request to take off our mobile nos, it did not work. Finall what worked is below

Next time we got a call, we asked if we could speak to someone senior as we wanted to open bulk accounts with ABN Amro for our associates. We got their Vice President (Sales) Telephone No in Delhi. Then my colleague called up his mobile no when he was busy in a meeting. When he said that he is busy in a meeting, my colleague replied there is something very urgent that he needs to speak about. So the VP quipped, tell me. Immediately My colleague started telling him about a wonderful software we have which does accountancy and 100 other things and we would be glad to sell it to ABN Amro for a big discount. Naturally the VP got very angry and shouted on the line ' Are you Crazy'. Immediately my friend replied that 'Yes I'm crazy. But this is what your people do to me when I am busy in middle of a meeting and I get a call for a loan'. I don't know what the VP did. But the menace of ABN Amro Telemarketing calls stopped

We are not so rich that we can start offering jobs to every telemarketer who calls us. I know what it is to be harrassed by these people and nothing works. Take this from a guy who has experienced this for the past 4 yrs.

A similar problem called SPAM on internet has made internet mail almost unusable. There are so many systems now days deployed to tackle spam. All of these systems mean, more CPU of computers get used. More heat gets generated, hence more electricity gets consumed, more coal has to be burnt, more trees get cut. More and more ice is getting melted and Ultimately lot of our coastal area will sink because greenland and Antartica will soon melt.

Hence we should do everything to stop this telemarketing and SPAM if we want to save this beautiful planet of our from Sinking.

Good for thinking about this Article
by on Jul 20, 2007 12:54 PM

This article comes at a good time when lot of us are getting our time wasted by telemarketers. So what if they are doing their job? Would you approve hired gangsters saying that 'they are just doing their jobs'. Nowdays even gangsters, thiefs, beggars, terrorists are hired and they do their job because of economic/political compulsions.

Telemarketing is pure harrasment and shouldn't be treated any differently than terrorism, blackmailing, etc. The people who do this job very well now what they are into.

It is good that rediff provides a forum like this for ordinary individuals like us who are face undue harrassment by this telemarketers and have no simple legal means to stop this menace.

My advice would be do not take a job which is criminal (dacoity, goondagiri, telemarketing, etc). If you take up then be prepared for the consequences.

Yes, they should be made fun off. This is a social menace and should be stopped. Telemarketing should be treated no different from a crime. This is pure harrassment. Period.

they shouldnot be fun off. The people are doing it for their bread and butter.. Try making fun of the people who employed them.

They themselves are never going to enjoy the telemarketing jobs anyhow..

If you want to reduce this nuisance you have to take some trouble. All the main culprits (ICICI, Citibank, Stanchart, Airtel etc) have websites where you can enter your phone numbers in the Do Not Call register. They do mention that it will take 30 days to take effect. This seems to work. If by chance anyone calls from them you can straightaway say that your number is in the DNC register and hang up.
If you are not internet-savvy then get someone to do this for you.

I have tried all this 'Do Not Call Register' for Standard Chartered, ICICI, Airtel, etc. It does not work. This website is just for a gimmick to avoid legal compulsions.

These agencies make some commission when they are able to sell a loan, credit card, etc. Hence this continues and Do Not Call Registry doesn't work

If you are already getting calls from these parties, the Do Not Call register does seem to work. As Umesh says, don't use this feature if you have not yet been discovered by them.

Tele Marketing

When they call for Granting a Credit Card, I ask for a Platinum card only, because there is nothing a Tele Marketeer can do about it. Most of the Banks do not have that, and the ones that have, only give it to very selected customers.

Secondly, if they talk about Loan, I ask for the rate of Interest, and after reconfirming that, I say, in whose name do I write the Cheque? I would like to GIVE a Loan.

I am fairly successful at warding of most of them.

What I do when some representative calls me is I initially show interest and then suddenly stop talking, the representative continues....for ever.

This is a very good way of increasing their cost of operations. By doing this you are wasting their time just like they do with us. If majority of us adopt this tactic, telemarketing menace can be brought to an end.
